Hillary Makes History, He’s With Her

Hillary in History: Hillary Clinton last night became the first woman ever nominated by a major political party to run for President of the United States. Coming near the end of Barack Obama’s presidency, it’s a continuation of enormous political and demographic change in the United States, regardless of what happens in November.

With supporters still holding up signs that said “Bernie,” the Vermont senator’s state was the last to cast its votes, and Bernie Sanders stood up to call for a unanimous voice vote in favor of Clinton.

He’s With Her: Former President Bill Clinton also made history last night, becoming the first husband to speak on behalf of a nominated wife. He’s running for “First Gentleman.”

“In the spring of 1971, I met a girl,” he began, and went on to weave a story of his romance with Hillary while she built a life in public service. “Hillary opened my eyes to a whole new world of public service by private citizens,” he said. And he quipped, “Meanwhile I was trying to get her to marry me.”

He told of how she became a wife, mother, working lawyer, an advocate for social change, and eventually an elected politician. He said, “She’s insatiably curious; she’s a natural leader; she’s a good organizer; and she’s the best darn change maker I have ever met in my entire life.”

Zingers: Praising Hillary Clinton, former Secy. of State Madeleine Albright said, “She knows that safeguarding freedom and security is not like hosting a TV reality show.”

And: “Many have argued that Donald Trump would harm our national security if he were elected president. The fact is that he has done damage just by running for president.”

Politi-Salad: Donald Trump and followers are sniping at the Democrats for not mentioning ISIS or terrorism in speeches at the Philadelphia convention. In a tweet, Trump asked, without a question mark, “Why aren’t the Democrats speaking about ISIS, bad trade deals, broken borders, police and law and order.” Well, for one thing, because it’s not the Republican convention — Trump has also taken to calling his opponent, Hillary Rodham Clinton, “Hillary Rotten Clinton” — The DNC’s new chair Donna Brazile danced her way onto the stage to speak last night, bringing cool to the convention — With her anti-Trump jokes dropping like dud bombs, actress Elizabeth Banks proved that politics are hard, but not as hard as comedy.

Fair and Balanced: The purge at Fox News appears to have begun with the firing of Michael Clemente, a former network VP who was demoted in recent months. Clemente is reported to have once aspired to replace the network’s creator, Roger Ailes. His dismissal was not connected to charges of sexual harassment that took down Ailes and tarnished other execs, but it’s a sign of change.

After the fall of Ailes, the Murdoch family may be about to re-shape Fox into a kinder and gentler conservative mouthpiece. Michael Wolffe writes for The Hollywood Reporter that Fox News has been “an embarrassment” for the heirs to the empire, James and Lachlan Murdoch. He says James Murdoch now “speaks to colleagues and friends of maintaining a conservative-leaning network, but one that is more responsible and nuanced.”

Messing with the formula could cost them. Fox’s friends are rabid and the network made $1.4 billion in 2014, multiples of the profit earned by CNN and MSNBC.

The Obit Page: The Rev. Tim LaHaye, a evangelical minister and co-author of the “Left Behind” end-of-days novels, died on Monday in San Diego at age 90. Together with his co-author jerry Jenkins, LaHaye cranked out stories based on the fall of man and the Second Coming of Christ and the appearance of the Anti-Christ. Sinners died in droves and the righteous went to heaven. LaHaye, though, went to the bank after 16 books that were spun off into movies, videos, and lines of clothing.

Fast Lane: The mother-in-law of Formula One racing kingpin Bernie Ecclestone has been reported kidnapped in Sao Paolo, Brazil, with the kidnappers demanding nearly $37 million ransom. Ecclestone is 85, his mother-in-law is 67, and his wife is 38.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
