Villanova Buzzer Beater, On Wisconsin

Buzzer Beater: Villanova hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to break a 74 point tie with North Carolina and win the NCAA basketball championship. Just moments earlier, with 4.7 seconds on the clock, North Carolina had come back from 10 points down to tie it with a three-pointer of their own. But Villanova took the ball confidently back down the court and the clock hit zero as the ball arced into the basket.

Cold Numbers: Bernie Sanders appears to have a chance of winning the Wisconsin primary today while having slim to no hope of winning the Democratic nomination. Sanders has done well in states that are mostly white and those states that have caucuses rather than primary votes. Facing Hillary Clinton’s substantial delegate lead, and heading to primaries in states that favor her, Sanders would have to win the remaining votes by a 13 percent margin to take the nomination.

Ted Cruz also looks like he’s going to beat Donald Trump in Wisconsin, where educated white collar Republicans are offended by Trump’s crudeness and a core of evangelical Christians likes the super religious Cruz.

Trump has rolled out his model wife Melania to try to bring back the women voters. “No matter who you are, a man or a woman, he treats everyone equal,” Mrs. Trump said in Milwaukee.

Both Trump and Cruz have said Ohio Gov. John Kasich should drop out and let the big boys duke it out. Kasich is running third by a mile. Trump said, “It’s very, very unfair just to have a stubborn guy like that to be campaigning.”

Politically Uncorrected: Despite student protests Princeton University has decided to keep the name Woodrow Wilson on its School of Public and International Affairs and a residential college. A report from the trustees acknowledged Wilson’s failings — he was an avowed segregationist — but they said while Wilson was president of Princeton he “transformed an intellectually lethargic campus into a renowned institution of higher learning.”

The trustee report said, “Princeton must openly and candidly recognize that Wilson, like other historical figures, leaves behind a complex legacy of both positive and negative repercussions. And that the use of his name implies no endorsement of views and actions that conflict with the values and aspirations of our times.”

The Panama Papers: Iceland’s prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson is facing calls for his resignation after his name was discovered among international leaders who have money in overseas tax shelters. Gunnlaugsson is one of dozens of politicians and prominent people whose names appeared in the leaked financial documents known as “The Panama Papers.” He claims he didn’t avoid taxes, but his overseas company has been attempting to recover lost money from Icelandic banks while Gunnlaugsson has been in office and helping to negotiate.

Migration: Greece has begun to send migrants back to Turkey in a deal worked out by the European Union to stem the tide of migrants coming from the Middle East and North Africa. From now on, migrants who land without permission in Greece will be returned to Turkey.

The Obit Page: Winston Mosely, the man who raped and killed 28-year-old Kitty Genovese in 1964 while neighbors in Kew Gardens, Queens, ignored her screams for help, died at age 81 in an upstate New York prison after 52 years behind bars. Mosely was a psychopathic killer and necrophiliac who chose his victim at random.

Mosley never became a household name, but his victim did. The murder of Kitty Genovese became synonymous with the coldness of the big city. It was initially, and incorrectly, reported that 38 witnesses ignored Genovese’s screams as she was stabbed to death. Some people did call the police, but many did nothing. One neighbor told the NY Times, “I didn’t want to get involved.”

Political Snapshot: As part of her effort to convince Wisconsin voters to turn out for Donald Trump, Sarah Palin posted a picture of herself on Facebook posing with her rifle while snuggling up to a dead boar.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
