Veteran Killed Three Cops, Humble Candidate

Officers Down: The gunman who killed three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers was a former Marine sergeant who had served in Iraq. He’s been identified as 29-year-old Gavin Long of Kansas City, Mo.

Two Baton Rouge police officers and a sheriff’s deputy were shot and killed yesterday in a gunfight with Long, who was also killed. Three other law enforcement officers were wounded.

The incident brings the number of police officers killed this month to 10, including the five killed in the Dallas sniper attack. “The violence, the hatred just has to stop,” said Gov. John Bel Edwards of Louisiana in a press conference.

It has not been determined whether the officers were targeted or killed responding to a crime in progress. It’s possible there was no crime at all. Louisiana is an “open carry” state. Officers had been dispatched at 8:40 am to a call about a man with a rifle dressed in black near a Baton Rouge shopping center. They found him near a beauty supply store and the shooting started within moments. An officer called on his radio, “Shots fired! Officer down! Shots fired. Officer down! Got a city officer down.”

Gov. Edwards said, “It’s at times like this I wish the command of the English language that I have were more adequate to the task to convey the full range of emotions that I am feeling and to express them on behalf of the state of Louisiana.”

Conventional Worries: The killings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge has heightened concerns about security at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this week. Donald Trump is likely to play up his loyalty to the police and tout his “law and order” agenda while protesters rally outside. He posted on Facebook, “How many law enforcement and people have to die because of a lack of leadership in our country? We demand law and order.” Adding to the tension is Ohio’s “open carry” gun law that will allow people to carry their weapons to convention-related events.

Driving While Black: Records show that Philando Castile, the man shot to death in the seat of his car by a police officer outside St. Paul, Minn., had been pulled over by police for minor infractions 49 times in the last 13 years. Castile had no criminal record, but the cops pulled him over for anything from failing to signal to having an unlit license plate. His mother said the actual reason was, “Driving while black.”

The Brexit Ramp: Britain’s new Prime Minister Theresa May said she’s not going to trigger the exit from the European Union until it’s all cool with Scotland. The government up there doesn’t want to leave the EU and just might exit Britain instead. The EU wants Britain to end the uncertainty and begin the exit immediately. But the vote was not binding and there is a possibility that the government will just drag its heels and try to let the whole thing be forgotten.

The Candidate: Donald Trump and running mate Mike Pence appeared on “60 Minutes” last night with interviewer Lesley Stahl. Trumped talked over his running mate and his interviewer. Crooked Hillary, create jobs, war on ISIS, make America great, make America safe, how humble he is. “I think I am, actually humble. I think I’m much more humble than you would understand.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
