US Kills ISIS Leader, Death for Tsarnaev

—From Franklin, Tenn.

Permawar: US Special Forces last night killed a senior Islamic State leader in eastern Syria, according to the National Security Council. The raid to capture Abu Sayyaf and his wife Umm Sayyaf turned into a firefight and Sayyaf was killed, according to the announcement. Umm Sayyaf was captured and taken to custody in Iraq.

World: An Egyptian court has sentenced former president Mohamed Morsi to death for his part in a 2011 prison break during the uprising to depose President Hosni Mubarek. Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, was being held in prison when armed men took over and freed everyone. Egypt’s first freely elected president was sentenced along with more than 100 other people, some of whom chanted “Down with military rule!”

Nation: It’s also the death penalty for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. A federal jury in Boston took 14 hours to decide he should die rather than spend life in prison. The jury evidently did not buy defense arguments that Dzhokhar was a meek follower under the jihadist spell of his older brother Tamarlan.

The decision was also a rebuke to the anti-death penalty crusader Sister Helen Prejean, who testified that she thought Tsarnaev was truly sorry for placing bombs that killed three people and injured hundreds.

Tsarnaev will not go to the death chamber any time soon. Appeals could go on for years, and the US government has placed a moratorium on federal executions while the penalty is under review.

On Track: The NTSB and FBI are investigating a report that the Amtrak train that crashed in Philadelphia may have been struck by an object before the accident. An assistant conductor told investigators she heard the engineer on the radio saying the train had just been hit. So far the engineer tells investigators he can’t remember what happened.

Horseplay: Kentucky Derby winner American Pharaoh is favored to win today’s Preakness, the second in horse racing’s Triple Crown. Pharaoh’s trainers say he never unleashed his full power in the Derby.

Toy Story: FAO Schwarz, once one of the most fabulous toy stores in the entire world, is closing its 5th Avenue emporium July 15th. They’ve been pushed out by high rents in what’s now a shopping zone for the super rich. The company is looking for a new location, but wouldn’t be able to open until at least the fall of 2016. Schwartz vows a comeback, but for now New Yorkers will be reduced to shopping in the FAO Schwartz section of Toys “R” Us.

Equal Rights: Here’s a twist on domestic disturbances. With same sex marriage comes same sex spousal abuse. Brittney Griner and her wife Glory Johnson, both players in the WNBA, have been suspended for seven games each for a domestic violence incident in April. The two had a fight in their house outside Phoenix.

Soap: The plot of the long-running CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful is going where no soap has gone before. The beautiful Maya has told her fiancé Rick the she’s not quite what he thinks she is. “There is something about me that I think a husband deserves to know about his wife,” she told him.

Rick: These estrogen pills that I found, does it have something to do with that?” Oh Rick, so clueless.

Maya explains that she was born “Myron” and was raised as a boy. Music up, fade to black, commercial.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
