Unrest in Odessa, Derby Fairy Tale

Ukraine’s interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has ordered an investigation but also says the unrest is “part of a plan fomented by Russia to destroy Ukraine”. Yatsenyuk admits that the Ukraine government is struggling to maintain control of the country.

Hat Day: California Chrome, the 5-2 favorite, ran away with it on the closing stretch to win the 140th Kentucky Derby. Chrome is the first California bred horse to win the Derby since 1962. Chrome is owned by Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, a couple of working guys outside Reno who bred the horse for $10,000 and went into the racing business. This is their only horse. Smarts: Artificial intelligence could turn out to be one of mankind’s most dangerous inventions, according to Physicist Stephen Hawking and two other scientists. They warn of a day when AI can slip the controls of man. They say in a joint paper, “One can imagine such technology outsmarting financial markets, out-inventing human researchers, out-manipulating human leaders, and developing weapons we cannot even understand. Whereas the short-term impact of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all.”

Drone On: Rangers in Yosemite National Park say the increasing use of radio-controlled aerial drones is endangering tourists and wildlife and just plain ruining the peace and quiet. DC Comics: President Obama fired the humor gun at his own feet last night at the White House Correspondents dinner, making fun of the troubled Obamacare rollout. He said, ‘‘in 2008 my slogan was ‘Yes we can.’ In 2013 my slogan was ‘Control-alt-delete.’’’

He saved some barbs for the press.

Fox News: ‘‘The Koch brothers bought a table here tonight, but as usual they used a shadowy right-wing organization as a front. Hello, Fox News!’’

The event was not quite as studded with big Hollywood stars as in previous years. A few big names were there, but some reports say the A-listers have grown tired of fawning reporters drooling on them during dinner.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
