Two Dead in Paris Raid, Sheen Paid Millions

War in Paris: One woman blew herself up and another person died during a shootout with the police this morning in the Paris suburb of St.-Denis. Seven people were arrested after the operation that unfolded over about seven hours of sporadic gunfire. A police dog was also killed in the raid.

Security forces were searching for Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the ISIS operative described as the prime organizer of last Friday’s terrorist attacks, but there’s no word yet on whether they got him. Abaaoud was thought to be in Syria, but witnesses after the shootout said they had seen him in the streets of St.-Denis.

>French President Francois Hollande today called for an international coalition to destroy ISIS.

>Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed that he will hunt down, “anywhere on the planet,” the people responsible for taking down a Russian tourist jet with a bomb. The Islamic State has claimed credit. Seventeen people are in custody in Egypt in connection with the terrorist bombing, two of them suspected of helping to place the bomb.

Russian aircraft are now working in tandem with French jets to pulverize Islamic State Targets. “Our air force’s military work in Syria must not simply be continued,” Putin said. “It must be intensified in such a way that the criminals understand that retribution is inevitable.”

The Threatdown: A soccer match between Germany and the Netherlands was cancelled yesterday before the kickoff because of a bomb threat. Two French airliners that took off from the US also made emergency landings because of bomb threats. No bombs were found in any of the incidents.

Sober Truth: Actor Charlie Sheen said yesterday on the Today show that he had paid out $10 million to keep a lid on his diagnosis of being HIV positive. “What people forget is that that’s money they’re taking from my children,” the 50-year-old actor told host Matt Lauer about “shakedowns” by people he knew. “I trusted them and they were deep in my inner circle, and I thought they could be helpful. My trust turned to their treason.”

Among those who blackmailed him was a prostitute, he said. The Daily Mail reports that just one woman got the whole $10 million.

Sheen said he was exposed to the virus four years ago, but he doesn’t know how. About his behavior over the years he said, “There’s a lot out there I’m not proud of. You can only hear ‘winning’ in the streets so many times,” he said. “I’ve pissed off a lot of really good opportunities.”

Politics: Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton said Republican politicians have reached a new low in their calls for barring Syrian refugees from the country. “We can’t act as though we are shutting the door to people in need without undermining who we are as Americans,” she told a crowd in Dallas.

Republican leaders in Congress have joined the call of state governors to stop accepting Syrian refugees. Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan said it’s a time for caution. Ryan said, “We think the prudent, the responsible thing is to take a pause in this particular aspect of this refugee program in order to verify that terrorists are not trying to infiltrate the refugee population.”

The 1 Percent: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindahl has dropped out of the Republican race for the presidential nomination. He never polled much more than 1 percent. Fourteen candidates are left.

The Obit Page: PF Sloan, the songwriter who wrote “Eve of Destruction” for Barry McGuire and “Secret Agent Man,” has died at age 70. Sloan also wrote hits in the 1960s for Herman’s Hermits, the Turtles, the Searchers, and the Grass Roots. But “Eve of Destruction” became an anthem for the Vietnam War generation.

Not Brain Surgery: The NY Times reports that no matter how much homework they give him, Ben Carson’s advisors can’t get the Republican presidential candidate to wrap his mind around foreign policy. One advisor told the Times, “Nobody has been able to sit down with him and have him get one iota of intelligent information about the Middle East,” and that Carson needs weekly policy briefings so “we can make him smart.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
