Trump Shakes Iran Deal, The Wrecking Ball

The Imperial Leader: President Trump yesterday threatened to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal if congress doesn’t jump in to fix what he doesn’t like about it. “We will not continue down a path whose predictable conclusion is more violence, more terror, and the very real threat of Iran’s nuclear breakout,” Trump said.

Iran has been found to be in compliance with the letter of the deal, but Trump claims they are violating its spirit. The basis of the agreement is that Iran agreed to curb its nuclear weapons development in exchange for lifted economic sanctions.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry, who was instrumental in negotiating the deal under President Obama, described Trump’s declaration as “ a reckless abandonment of facts in favor of ego and ideology.”

Trump is going against his own national security advisers, who want to stay in the Iran deal. They reached a compromise with the president, encouraging him to throw the deal to congress.

The US — and Trump — can’t unilaterally alter or end the treaty. The other parties, Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and, of course, Iran, want to stay in.

But Trump said he might just pull the US out.

Binary Choice: In a stunning declaration, Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker told The Washington Post that President Trump has “castrated” his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson. The head of the Foreign Relations Committee said Trump’s undercutting of Tillerson leaves only a simple choice between war with North Korea or Iran or accepting them as nuclear powers.

“You cannot publicly castrate your own secretary of state without giving yourself that binary choice,” Corker said. “The tweets — yes, you raise tension in the region [and] it’s very irresponsible. But it’s the first part” — the “castration” of Tillerson — “that I am most exercised about.”

To Your Health: President Trump’s wrecking ball approach to destroying Obamacare shifts billions of dollars in costs to other parts of the federal budget, taxpayers, and insurance customers, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Congratulating himself, Trump tweeted, “Very proud of my Executive Order which will allow greatly expanded access and far lower costs for HealthCare. Millions of people benefit!”

Trump’s move has the potential to throw the insurance markets into chaos, and cause companies to pull out of the exchanges. Ending the $7 billion a year subsidies to insurance companies that keep costs down for low income people will actually cost the government  $194 billion over the next 10 years. Customers who lose their subsidy from their insurance company would just get more from the government under Obamacare.

Wildfire: With 35 people confirmed dead in the Northern California wildfires, many of the victims are in their 60s to 90s. It seems that they were slow to respond to the fast-moving fires. Hesitation, in some cases, proved fatal. One 75-year-old woman spent the night in the swimming pool with her husband, but died by morning.

The fires are in the heart of wine country. At least 19 wineries have been damaged or destroyed, including the better-known Stag’s Leap.

Captivity: The Canadian husband of an American woman held hostage in Afghanistan for five years said their captors killed one of their infant children. Joshua Boyle said, “The stupidity and evil of the Haqqani network’s kidnapping of a pilgrim and his heavily pregnant wife engaged in helping ordinary villagers in Taliban-controlled regions of Afghanistan was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorizing the murder of my infant daughter.”

His wife, Caitlan Coleman, was pregnant when the couple was taken. She returned from captivity with three children.

Editor’s Note: The list of women who say Hollywood Mogul Harvey Weinstein did creepy things to them keeps growing, so we’re just calling in sick for the rest of the morning.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
