Trump and Kim Sign Deal

Singapore Sling: President Trump and North Korean dictator Km Jong-un met for five hours and signed an agreement in which the North would give up its nuclear weapons and the US would suspend joint military exercises with the South.

Speaking in his usual superlatives at the signing, Trump said, “We have developed a very special bond so people are going to be very impressed. People are going to be very happy.”

“Anyone can make war, but only the most courageous can make peace,” Trump declared afterwards.

Trump said North Korea would disarm “very quickly” but the agreement did not include a timetable or provisions for verifying. “I think our whole relationship with North Korea and the Korean Peninsula is going to be a very much different situation than it has in the past,” Trump said.

Kim said at the signing ceremony, that “The world will see a major change.”

Trump’s declaration of trust and admiration for Kim is stunning in the wake of his insulting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the leader of one of America’s closest allies.

Trump and Kim met and shook hands this morning in Singapore in front of a row of North Korean and American flags then sat down for the face to face meeting. Trump’s demeanor was friendly and he spoke to Kim in those first moments but didn’t smile. A few minutes later on the way to the meeting he was looser. He smiled and so did Kim.

Only months ago the two were threatening each other with nuclear war.

Kim won the first round just by getting a handshake and the meeting. The mercurial child autocrat with nuclear weapons was accepted at the world table as an adult.

President Trump mentioned the death of American college student Otto Warmbier as a motivation behind the summit. Warmbier spent 17 months in a North Korean prison before he was released in a coma and died only days later.

“Otto did not die in vain,” Trump said. “He had a lot to do with us being here today.”

Purged: The Supreme Court upheld an Ohio law that allows the state to purge voters from the registration rolls if they have skipped two elections and ignored a postcard asking for confirmation of the voter’s address.

The vote was 5-4 with the conservative justices in the majority. Other states run by a conservative legislative majority say they will pass laws similar to Ohio’s.

Conservative states in recent years have passed laws aimed at stopping what they claim is voter fraud, even though it rarely happens. Laws that limit early voting and same-day registration and require specific identity documents tend to eliminate Democratic voters.

Fear not a Factor: Attorney Gen. Jeff Sessions announced yesterday that fear of domestic or gang violence is not grounds for a foreign refugee to be granted asylum in the US. His decision reverses a decision by a Justice Department immigration appeals court that had given asylum to a woman from El Salvador who had been raped and abused by her husband.

“The prototypical refugee flees her home country because the government has persecuted her,” Sessions wrote in his decision. “An alien may suffer threats and violence in a foreign country for any number of reasons relating to her social, economic, family, or other personal circumstances.

“Yet the asylum statute does not provide redress for all misfortune,” Sessions wrote.

Sick Bay: President Trump tweeted shortly before the summit began that Larry Kudlow, his new economic adviser, was in Walter Reed Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He’s 70.

Nation: The 19-month old daughter of former Olympic skier Bode Miller and his wife Morgan Beck drowned in the pool during a party at a neighbor’s home over the weekend, the couple announced. They said in a social media statement, “We are beyond devastated.” A Florida man killed four children and then killed himself after a 21-hour standoff with the police. Two of the children who ranged  in age from 1 to 11 were his own.

Second Jobs: Millions of Americans have two or three jobs to get by. President Trump’s daughter and son-in-law Jared Kushner made $82 million in outside income last year while working full time for the President, according to new financial disclosure forms the couple filed.

They have a lot of enterprises, but Ivanka Trump earned $3.9 million from the Trump International Hotel in Washington and more than $2 million in severance from the Trump Organization in 2017. Kushner reported over $5 million in income from the Quail Ridge apartment complex in Plainsboro, NJ.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
