Tornadoes Kill in Texas, Chicago Cops Kill

Heavy Weather: At least eight people were killed in the Dallas area last night as 11 tornadoes touched down in North Texas. Cars were tossed and homes destroyed. A twister ripped through an RV park.

Five of the deaths took place at the intersection of two major highways where a tornado threw cars off an overpass. The deaths bring to at least 20 the number of people killed in weather incidents during the past week.

And back on the West coast, a winter wildfire shut down the 101 Freeway 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles near Ventura. Once only a summer hazard, wildfires are beginning to burn year round in California.

Chicawgo: The cops are under scrutiny again for shooting and killing a 19-year-old man who was the subject of a domestic disturbance call, as well as the 55-year-old first floor tenant who opened the door to let in the police. Both were black. A one-paragraph news release from the Chicago PD said officers were “confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon.”

A relative had reported that Quintonio LeGrier, 19, was behaving oddly and wielding a metal baseball bat around the second-floor apartment where his father lived. LeGrier’s mother told reporters he had been having mental health problems.

According to reports, Bettie Jones got out of bed on the first floor to let in the police through a common door that serves both the upstairs and downstairs apartments. LeGrier came down the steps with his bat and the cops opened fire, killing Jones and LeGrier. The police now say that killing Jones, a mother of five, was a mistake.

The Sports Page: A television documentary by Al Jazeera claims that back in 2011 Denver quarterback Peyton Manning and his wife took human growth hormones supplied by an Indianapolis anti-aging clinic. Manning was quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts for 14 seasons.

The documentary was done by al Jazeera’s new investigative team and Liam Collins, a hurdler who went undercover to learn about the use of drugs in sports.

The Broncos issued a statement on Manning’s behalf saying, “The allegation that I would do something like that is complete garbage and is totally made up. It never happened. Never. I really can’t believe somebody would put something like this on the air. Whoever says this is making stuff up.”

Permawar: Iraqi forces are reported to have driven Islamic State militants out of a former government compound in the center of Ramadi. The militants have fled to another quarter of the city and are still fighting. The government has been trying to re-take Ramadi since early November.

Travel and Resorts: A 53-year-old British man has completed what is believed to be the first non-stop rowing trip across the Pacific from North America to Australia. John Beeden set off from San Francisco on June 1 in his 20-foot boat and rowed as many as 15 hours a day, at least 7,000 miles. Beeden’s wife says he’s a restless man who will probably be looking for a new adventure in just a few weeks.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
