Three US Dead One Missing

THE WAR ROOM: Three American soldiers are dead and a third listed as missing after a weekend of warfare with Iran.

One soldier died Saturday while disposing Iranian drone wreckage in northern Iraq. On Friday two soldiers were killed in an Iranian missile barrage in Jordan that left a third missing in action, although remains recovered at the scene are believed to be of that soldier.

This brings to 17 the number of soldiers killed since the war opened in February as the mutual attacks increase. US Central Command said last night that it had begun a new wave of strikes against Iran for the ninth consecutive night to degrade “Iranian military capabilities.”

The NY Times reports that despite escalated fighting, top diplomats from both the US and Iran say they are open to renewed peace talks.

DESTINY WAS WRITTEN: Spain won the World Cup 1-0 … or one “nil” as they say … after a match that lasted 140 minutes of regular, overtime, and stoppage time.

Argentina’s Enzo Fernández  was given a red card ejection in stoppage-time, forcing his team to play short a man for the rest of the game.  Spain’s Ferran Torres scored in overtime and despite heroic efforts, Argentina was unable to answer. After the game, Torres said, said “destiny was written.”

BRO CULTURE: Andrew and Tristan Tate, the brothers who built a social media empire championing hyper-masculinity, were arrested in Miami for extradition to Britain to face criminal charges of rape and sex trafficking. The brothers who have joint US/British citizenship have previously faced criminal and civil legal proceedings in Britain, the United States, and Romania.

Andrew Tate built fame and fortune teaching young men to embrace a traditional form of masculinity, dominating women, and promoting the “manosphere.” The brothers are also accused of running a sex trafficking operation in Romania.

IT’S POLITICAL: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned and former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has arrived at Buckingham Palace to meet the King and be confirmed as Prime Minister.

Burnham pledged in a speech to give “hope back” and challenge a political culture and economic model he said, “simply doesn’t work well enough for ordinary people.”

ON THE MENU: The FDA has backed off its report that the outbreak of explosive diarrhea can be traced back to Taylor Farms in Mexico. They say the test was a false positive.

INFINITE SCROLL:

— Federal agents around the country have been told that the FBI would no longer investigate confrontations with immigration agents, some of them violent, that could result in prosecution Department of Homeland Security agents, the NY Times reports.

FBI managers around the country were told of the change in policy in a written notice last Thursday, the Times reports according to its sources. The guidance  said that the bureau would stop investigating claims of assaults against Department of Homeland Security agents … cases that sometimes backfire into cases against the agents themselves.

A joint statement from the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security, denied this, saying, “This administration has been clear, anyone who assaults law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

— President Trump said his new Air Force One jet given by Qatar will be taken out of service to be “maxed out,” presumably for the installation of anti-missile defenses. The Secret Service prevented Trump from returning from the NATO summit in Turkey because of its vulnerability.

AMERICONE DREAM: The good-works foundation created by the founders of the whimsical Ben & Jerry’s ice cream appears to be folding in a dispute with the corporation that now owns the company.

WAMC public radio in Albany, NY reports that the foundation has closed its doors in a dispute with parent company Magnum Ice Cream, which also owns Talenti, Breyers, and Klondike.

Ben & Jerry’s is known for inventing flavors like a five-year-old; Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Caramel Brownie, Milk & Cookies. The founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, always said that giving back to the community should be a part of business. They created their foundation with their first public stock offering in 1985.

The foundation was always supposed to be independent from the company, but Magnum ordered an audit of the foundation, claiming there were irregularities without sharing the information with the foundation, according to WAMC.

Ben Cohen told WAMC’s Pat Bradley that, “I am really clear that this is just a systematic effort to rid Ben & Jerry’s of the values that built the company for the last half century.”

FLEET: British runner Josh Kerr broke the world record for the mile on Saturday in London, crossing the line at 3 minutes, 42.66 seconds, cutting nearly half a second off the record set by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj in Rome in 1999.

Kerr had said back in March that he would break the record. “It’s silly to call your shot that early,” he told BBC Sport, “obviously a lot of things can go wrong. But I’m surrounded by amazing people, and I was able to just stay consistent, put the work in.”

THE SPIN RACK: Troy Jackson, a logger, has taken the lead among Maine Democrats to take on the run for Senate against Republican incumbent Susan Collins. The 58-year-old Jackson holds many of the same progressive beliefs as his predecessor, Graham Platner, whose campaign dissolved under an accusation of having raped a former girlfriend. — Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD, delivered the couple’s fourth child, a boy. — Two US Forest Service employees in a remote area of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest were kidnapped, zip-tied, and held inside a trailer in a remote area last week before being rescued Friday morning. The incident lasted 17 hours before the two were released and a 49-year-old man and his son were arrested.

BELOW THE FOLD: President Trump was booed at the World Cup final and Justin Bieber should have been.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
