Remember Him on Memorial Day

The “Me” in Memorial: President Trump used Memorial Day to brag about what he believes are his accomplishments in office.

“Happy Memorial Day!” he tweeted yesterday. “Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice!”

The war dead would be so pleased.

Trump’s campaign website also offered a 25 percent discount during its “Memorial Day Sale.”

“You ONLY have a few hours left to get 25% off ALL Official Trump Store purchases before the Memorial Day sale is OVER,” read an email blast to customers. The code word to get discount MAGA caps and bathing suits was “remember.”

So touching.

Trump’s version of truth and reality is a matter of perpetual debate. Over the weekend he falsely claimed that Democrats are responsible for his policy of separating illegal immigrants from their children. He lied. The Washington Post has tracked more than 3,000 distortions and outright lies delivered by the President.

The NY Times’ Maggie Haberman tweeted, “I have written stories about his lies, falsehoods, whoppers, half-truths, salesman-like stretches. The reality is that what he does can be hard to label because, as anyone who has worked for him will tell you in candor, he often thinks whatever he says is what’s real.”

“President Trump is a liar, CNN’s Brian Stelter said, “This has been well-documented. He misleads the public constantly. But: Not everything he says is a lie. I think we need to keep distinguishing between deflections, exaggerations and straight up lies.”

Now This: The President was up early this morning tweeting the following: “The 13 Angry Democrats (plus people who worked 8 years for Obama) working on the rigged Russia Witch Hunt, will be MEDDLING with the mid-term elections, especially now that Republicans (stay tough!) are taking the lead in Polls. There was no Collusion, except by the Democrats!”

Nation: A North Carolina local news anchor and the photographer he was working with were killed yesterday when a 3-foot diameter tree fell on their news van. Mike McCormick and photographer Aaron Smeltzer of WYFF News in Greenville were found dead with the engine in their van running and the transmission in drive. —- Republican Rep. Thomas Garrett of Virginia, a member of the far right Freedom Caucus announced that he is an alcoholic and is giving up his run for a second term to recover and be with his family. He’s the 48th Republican this year to retire or announce they will not seek reelection to the House. Former New York Mayor and now Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani went to Yankee Stadium for his 74th birthday. When his presence was announced, the crowd booed.

Weather Report: Subtropical Storm Alberto made landfall on the Florida Panhandle last night, hitting Laguna beach with winds of up to 45 mph. There’s some worry about flooding following the storm.

The Sports Page: OK, not a huge number of people care, but Yale won its first ever NCAA lacrosse championship in Foxboro, Mass. yesterday, beating Duke 13-11. Any day Duke loses is a good day. Yale coach Andy Shay, now in his 15th year, had losing records in four of his first six years. The Las Vegas Golden Knights won their first outing in the Stanley Cup finals, beating  the Washington Capitals 6-4. The Golden State Warriors reached their 4th straight NBA finals beating Houston 101-92. They’ll meet the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA finals. Cleveland’s LeBron James dominated the Eastern Conference series with the Boston Celtics. He scored 35 points and had 15 rebounds in the Cavaliers’ win over the Boston Celtics in Game 7 Sunday.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
