The Democrat Show, The Hillary Standard

Boos and Unity: Time to remind you that Will Rogers famously said, “I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat.”

Protesters marched outside the Philadelphia convention hall yesterday chanting, “Hell no DNC we won’t vote for Hill-a-ree!” Bernie Sanders delegates and supporters are outraged about leaked emails that showed Democratic National Committee leaders were trying to help Hillary Clinton win the nomination.

DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz was booed yesterday at a breakfast meeting of her own Florida delegation. As a result, she disappeared and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake gaveled the convention open. Donna Brazile, a political veteran and frequent member of CNN’s political analysis chorus line, will take over as interim chair of the DNC.

Amid chants of “Bernee! Bernie!,” Sanders gracefully bowed out and threw his support to Hillary Clinton. Some delegates were crying, but they roared approval when he said, “Any objective observer will conclude, that based on her ideas, and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States!”

Then he went on far too long as if he was still in the running.

The Putin Mosaic: In a plot out of an airport thriller, the FBI is investigating accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin engineered the leak of DNC emails to embarrass the Democrats and throw the election to Donald Trump, “The Siberian Candidate.” Cyber experts say the hackers left footprints of a state-sponsored operation. Putin and Trump have admired each other’s style. But does Putin want Trump to make America great, or to ensure that Russia is greater?

The Speeches: First Lady Michelle Obama, a Democratic favorite who was never elected, spoke about explaining the politics of Donald Trump to children. “This election, and every election, is about who will have the power to shape the next four or eight years of their lives.”

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren: “To every Republican in Congress who said, ‘No,’ the American people are coming for you … yeah, yup, yes, that’s right.”

New Jersey Sen. Corey Booker, who’d been a contender for the vice-presidential nomination, delivered a standard-setting speech about progress and the quest for equality. “Patriotism is love of country,” he said, “but you can’t love your country without loving your countrymen and countrywomen.”

Not so politically polished, but effective, was Cheryl Lankford, the widow of an Army Sgt. Major, told how she spent her survivor’s benefits to attend “Trump University,” and believes she was cheated in a useless real estate course. “He made millions of dollars off of people like me. Millions,” she said. “The whole thing was a lie.” And she asked, “What kind of man does that?”

The Hillary Standard: In an interview with CBS News anchor Scott Pelley, Hillary Clinton said she is held to a different standard of scrutiny from other politicians. Confronted by Pelley for a second time about the question of her honesty, Clinton said, “I often feel that there’s the Hillary Standard, and then there’s the standard for everybody else.”

In a post circulating the internet, a Portland, Ore., writer named Michael Arnovitz says that Clinton’s troubles are pure sexism; Americans don’t like a woman who seeks power. “What I see is that the public view of Hillary Clinton does not seem to be correlated to ‘scandals’ or issues of character or whether she murdered Vince Foster,” Arnovitz writes. “No, the one thing that seems to most negatively and consistently affect public perception of Hillary is any attempt by her to seek power. Once she actually has that power her polls go up again. But whenever she asks for it her numbers drop like a manhole cover.”

Five Ring Circus: The governing body of international swimming has banned seven Russians from competing in the Rio Olympics, possibly making them the first to feel the consequences of an IOC ruling on widespread doping. The IOC left it to international sport federations to decide whether to disqualify athletes. All Russian equestrians, tennis players, and volleyball team members have been allowed in. Rulings are still expected on everything from boxing to canoeing, cycling, judo, pentathlon, weightlifting, and wrestling.

News Roundup: An evacuation order that affected more than 20,000 Southern California residents has been lifted, but a 50 square mile fire continues to burn — A former employee armed with a knife killed 19 people and injured 20 at a care facility for the disabled outside Tokyo — Two attackers who killed a priest inside a Normandy church were shot dead.

Berned Out: Comedian Sarah Silverman spoke to the Democratic convention last night; “She’s like the only person ever to be overqualified for the job of president … To the ‘Bernie or Bust’ people: You’re being ridiculous.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
