Teed Off President, Baked Alaska

Report from the Greens: A day after the release of the Special Counsel report, President Trump went to Florida to play golf and tweet his outrage. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren became the first presidential candidate to call for Trump’s  impeachment and Utah’s Mitt Romney said he was “sickened” by the behavior of Trump and his associates detailed in the report.

Trump’s approval rating fell three points to 37 percent, a low for the year according to a Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll.

The House has subpoenaed a full copy of the report, which was redacted by the Justice Department because the released version “leaves most of Congress in the dark”.

While claiming exoneration and innocence, which the report did not give him, Trump unleashed on aides who had spoken to Robert Mueller’s investigators.  Probably referring to former White House lawyer Don McGahn, Trump wrote, “Watch out for people that take so-called ‘notes,’ when the notes never existed until needed.” McGahn said he kept notes of conversations with Trump and the President has no knowledge that he didn’t.

Trump went on to say that he never testified and “It was not necessary for me to respond to statements made in the ‘Report’ about me, some of which are total bullshit & only given to make the other person look good (or me to look bad).”

Interestingly, the President claims the contents of the report are untrue while also saying it clears him of wrongdoing.

The Russia investigation began because federal investigators noticed some odd things going on during the 2016 presidential campaign and looked into it. The report portrayed a White House of sleaze and dishonesty. Trump repeatedly tried to delay and stop the investigation that ultimately held he was not exonerated of obstructing justice.

Sen. Romney tweeted, “I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office of the land, including the President.”

Trump, whose play book is always to fight, deny, and get revenge continued writing ominously, “It is now finally time to turn the tables and bring justice to some very sick and dangerous people who have committed very serious crimes, perhaps even Spying or Treason.”

The Parent Trap:A Perris, Calif. couple who kept their 13 children imprisoned and underfed in what was described as a “house of horrors” has been sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison with the possibility of parole.

David and Louise Turpin had both pleaded guilty to 14 felony charges including torture, false imprisonment, cruelty to adult dependents, and child cruelty. They sometimes chained the children to beds in a room littered with feces.

Some of the children spoke in court before the sentence. A 30-year-old daughter identified only as Jane Doe No. 4, who was described as thin and trembling,  said, “My parents took my whole life from me, but now I’m taking my life back. I’m in college now and living independently.”

Their son Joshua said, “I cannot describe in words what we went through growing up. Sometimes I still have nightmares of things that have happened, such as my siblings being chained up or being beaten.”

The children said they loved their parents but did not object to the sentence. What possessed the Turpins has never been explained.

Men and Mountains Meet:Three of the world’s most elite climbers are presumed to have been killed in an avalanche while climbing Howse Peak in Canada’s Banff National Park. They are American Jess Roskelley, and Austrians David Lama and Hansjörg Auer.

The three were taking a very difficult route up the sheer face of the mountain. Searchers in helicopters say they have seen evidence of a slide mixed with mountain climbing equipment.

Branded:Clare Bronfman, an heiress to the Seagram liquor fortune pleaded guilty in the case against Nxivm, a “sex cult” that branded women.

Based in a suburb of Albany, NY, Nxivm was supposed to be a self-help group. Some of the women were recruited into a secret order within the group, branded on the pelvis with the leader’s initials, and coerced into having sex with him, prosecutors said.

Reclassified:Hurricane Michael was classified as a Category 4 storm when it hit the Florida coast in October of 2018 with winds up to 155 mph. (We don’t use the term “packing winds” because hurricanes don’t have suitcases.) After looking at the data, the National Weather Service says Michael was actually a Category 5 blowing up to 160 mph. Category 5 starts at 157.

That makes Hurricane Michael the strongest storm to hit the states since Andrew devastated South Florida in 1999 and the fourth strongest ever. Michael was blamed for 49 deaths and more than $5.5 billion in damage.

Baked Alaska:At least five people have died in Alaska this spring falling through ice that rotted unusually early.

Sarah Kaplan writes for The Washington Post that measurements at the Barrow Atmospheric Baseline Observatory show that the state is warming faster than any other, and at an alarming rate. Temperatures this March were nearly 19 degrees higher than the historical normal. It never dipped below freezing.  Carbon dioxide is twice the global norm.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
