Taliban Leader Killed, NY Sues the Trumps

D.O.A: A US drone strike in northeastern Kunar province killed Pakistan Taliban chief Mullah Fazlullah, the extremist Muslim leader who ordered the assassination of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, an Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman said Friday.

Yousafzai, just 15 at the time, was shot in the head in 2012 but fully recovered. Fazlullah had ordered her killed for promoting girls’ education.

Personal Checking: The State of New York has sued President Trump and his  three oldest children accusing all of them of violating nonprofit laws and demanding that the charity be dissolved and the four Trumps banned from working in non-profit organizations.

The lawsuit accuses the Trump and their foundation of “self-dealing,” using the money for political expenses, settling personal lawsuits, and even paying $10,000 for a portrait of Trump that now hangs in one of his golf clubs.

The suit demands $2.8 million in restitution.

Trump immediately struck back on Twitter saying, “The sleazy New York Democrats, and their now disgraced (and run out of town) A.G. Eric Schneiderman, are doing everything they can to sue me on a foundation that took in $18,800,000 and gave out to charity more money than it took in, $19,200,000. I won’t settle this case!…”

New York’s new Attorney Gen. Barbara Underwood said, “The Trump Foundation was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality.”

Insubordination: An Inspector General’s report says that former FBI director James Comey was “insubordinate” in his public statements about the Hillary Clinton email investigation in the closing days of the 2016 campaign but agreed  with the decision not to charge candidate Clinton with a crime for using private email as secretary of state.

The 500-page report says, ““We found no evidence that the conclusions by department prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations. Rather, we concluded that they were based on the prosecutor’s assessment of facts, the law and past department practice.”

The IG also concluded that political bias did not play a part in the handling of either the Clinton matter or the Russian-election influencing investigation.

Comey tweeted, “The conclusions are reasonable, even though I disagree with some.”

President Trump’s self-serving reading of all this was encompassed in the following tweet: “So, the Democrats make up a phony crime, Collusion with the Russians, pay a fortune to make the crime sound real, illegally leak (Comey) classified information so that a Special Councel will be appointed, and then Collude to make this pile of garbage take on life in Fake News!”

It’s still spelled “counsel” Mr. President.

Family Values: Immigration lawyers say that a breastfeeding baby was ripped from her mother’s arms in the Trump administration’s campaign to separate illegal immigrants from their children. The other was handcuffed when she resisted, they said.

As many as 500 children have been taken from their parents since the policy was announced last May. Some are being held in an empty Walmart store converted to a holding pen for 1500 children. Diapers in aisle 27.

The White House through Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders insists they are just enforcing immigration laws, but there’s no law requiring the separation of families while immigration cases are adjudicated.

Attorney Gen. Jeff Sessions said in a speech to law enforcement officers in Indiana, “I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes.”

House Republicans plan to vote next week on two of immigration bills, one of which would end the separation policy.

Nation: Your worst nightmare. A roller coaster derailed at the boardwalk in Daytona Beach, Fla., sending two riders plunging 34 feet to the ground while leaving several others stranded in a dangling coaster car. Six people went to the hospital.

The Real Estate Section: The Walt Disney Company is selling ABC television’s upper West Side New York office and studio complex to a real estate developer for a billion dollars, according to the Commercial Observer, a real estate publication.

The complex of buildings at 66th St. just off Broadway houses the headquarters of ABC News. A developer plans to tear it all down and build residential units.

ABC News would move maybe to oblivion.

Fox News picked up on this and posted a savagely accurate story about what this means for the future of ABC News, the former employer of the editorial staff of The Rooney Report. Disney never cared much about owning what was once a stalwart voice in the news. The Fox report says, “Disney executives voice increasing frustration with the high costs and low returns of the news operation.” They always have and it may be that the bad PR of killing a legacy news operation is the only thing that has stopped them.

The Fox report points out, accurately, that World News is fluff stuffed with weather reports, Nightline has been banished to some unknown time slot past midnight, and ABC has no news program with the reputation of CBS’s “60 Minutes.”  The story says, “How much ‘news’ remains at ABC News has become a real question.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
