Suspect Taken After Gunfight, “Christie Knew”

The Bomber: After a brief running gunfight, police in Linden, NJ, yesterday wounded and arrested the prime suspect in weekend bombing incidents in New York City and New Jersey. Ahmad Khan Rahami had been found sleeping in the doorway of a bar and pulled a gun when he was spoken to by an officer, according to the police.

Police said Rahami shot one officer then took off running, firing his gun. Witnesses described hearing many gunshots. Two police officers were slightly injured in the incident. One was shot in the abdomen, but his vest stopped the bullet. Rahami was hit in a shoulder.

One of the bombs Rahami is believed to have set in New York injured 29 people. He’s been charged with attempted murder, including attempting to kill a police officer.

Rahami is a naturalized US citizen, born in Afghanistan. The Rahami family runs a fried chicken restaurant out of their home in Elizabeth, NJ, called “First American Fried Chicken.” It’s been the subject of frequent neighborhood complaints about noise and customers gathering outside at all hours. The city passed an ordinance requiring the restaurant to close at 10 pm, but the family apparently ignored that.

One of the Rahami sons got into a fight with a cop and went to Afghanistan. The family sued the city, claiming they were targets of racial harassment.

Bridge to Nowhere: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie knew about the 2013 plot to close lanes of the George Washington bridge to punish a local mayor for not supporting him, according to the prosecutors’ opening statement in the criminal trial of two former Christie aides.  They said Christie knew both before it happened, and while the closures were carried out. Christie has denied knowing anything about it, even while the traffic backed up for days into Ft. Lee.

Prosecutor Vikas Khanna cautioned jurors not to speculate on why some people were not charged with a crime. “The evidence may show that others could have, should have, perhaps knew certain aspects of what was going on in Fort Lee,” he said. “Perhaps you will even wonder what happened to those people.”

One of them did not win the Republican presidential nomination.

Profiled in Courage: In the wake of the New York and New Jersey bomb incidents over the weekend, Donald Trump on Fox News yesterday called for profiling of refugees and immigrants “from that part of the world” after investigators identified a suspect of Afghan descent.

Trump admired Israel’s profiling techniques. “They profile. They see somebody that’s suspicious. They will profile. They will take that person in and check out. Do we have a choice? Look what’s going on. Do we really have a choice? We’re trying to be so politically correct in our country and this is only going to get worse.”

Permawar: The United Nations has suspended aid shipments after warplanes bombed a relief convoy, destroying 18 out of 31 trucks. It hasn’t been determined whether it was Syrian or Russian jets that attacked. Syria has unilaterally ended a ceasefire arranged by the US and Russia.

Leak: Gasoline prices are climbing in the Southeast after the shutdown of a leaky gasoline supply pipeline that transported fuel from Houston. As much as 250,000 gallons of gasoline leaked before a mining inspector discovered the problem. The pipe supplies about 40 percent of the gasoline supply for the East Coast.

Free Toy Inside: Both presidential candidates at times have been running their fundraising like a contest on the back of a cereal box. Hillary offered tickets to the Broadway hit Hamilton.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
