Summit Back On, Where’s Melania?

On Again: President Trump announced that the North Korean summit is back on for June 12th even before he read a letter handed to him by a high level envoy from leader Kim Jong-un.

Trump dismissed some of the harsh language from both sides in recent weeks that led him to cancel the planned meeting.

“We’re over that, totally over that, and now we’re going to deal and we’re going to really start a process,” Trump told reporters after his meeting with the North Korean envoy. “We’re meeting with the chairman on June 12, and I think it’s probably going to be a very successful — ultimately, a successful process.”

The North’s envoy, Kim Yong-chol, the former intelligence chief and top nuclear arms negotiator, personally handed Trump a cartoonishly large letter from Kim. It had to be 12 by 12. The North Koreans believe in the formality of letters personally delivered.

Trump downplayed the possibility of dramatic developments coming from the talks. “No, I don’t see that happening. But I see over a period of time. And frankly, I said, ‘Take your time,’” Trump told reporters.

Billing Department: Aiming the many diplomatic questions being wrestled with in advance of the Singapore summit is the hotel bill. Who’s going to pay the bill for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, whose government is broke? Kim prefers the Fullerton, a neo-classical hotel at which the presidential suite is $6,000 a night. Maybe the US could pay the bill in exchange for  him giving up a missile each night he’s there.

Econ 101: The economy added 223,000 jobs in May, many more than the 188,000 that had been predicted. The biggest gains were in retail (31,000), health care (29,000), construction (25,000), professional and technical services (23,000).

President Trump broke protocol by tweeting a suggestion that the report would be a good one. “Looking forward to seeing the employment numbers at 8:30 this morning,” he tweeted at 7:21 am. Within seconds, the U.S. dollar strengthened and Treasury yields rose, giving Twitter-following investors a heads up.

Loyal Opposition: Former CIA Director John Brennan writes in The Washington Post about why he keeps speaking up and criticizing President Trump. he says, “Mr. Trump charts his every move according to a calculus of how it will personally help or hurt him. His strategy is to undercut real, potential and perceived opponents; his focus is to win at all costs, irrespective of truth, ethics, decency and — many would argue — the law. His disparagement of institutions is designed to short-circuit legitimate law enforcement investigations, intelligence assessments and media challenges that threaten his interests.”

Brennan finished saying, “As someone who had the rare privilege of directly serving four presidents, I will continue to speak out loudly and critically until integrity, decency, wisdom — and maybe even some humility — return to the White House.

Kilauea: Lava from Hawaii’s Mt. Kilauea volcano has now destroyed at least 87 homes. Authorities have told residents of Leilani Estates to evacuate or be arrested.

The Roundup: The Pentagon admitted in a report yesterday that US military strikes in 2017 killed 499 civilians in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen. The report says another 450 reports of civilian deaths have yet to be assessed. Deep in financial crisis, Puerto Rico closed 167 public schools last year. Now they say they are closing another 265. Student enrollment has dropped dramatically since Hurricane Maria devastated the island. President Trump ordered Energy Secretary Rick Perry to top the shutdown of ailing coal and nuclear power plants that he said are needed to maintain the nation’s energy mix, grid resilience and national security. The President is also preparing to order utility companies to buy power from coal and nuclear plants.

Missing Person: President Trump is at Camp David this weekend without his wife Melania. It’s been 23 days since the First Lady has been seen in public, a rare and strange thing for an occupant of the White House.

On May 14 the First Lady had a procedure for a benign kidney condition. The White House insists she’s fine and Melania, or someone doing it for her, tweeted, “I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I’m doing. Rest assured, I’m here at the @WhiteHouse w my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!”

She’s telecommuting.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
