Stormy Weather, The Shipping News

Hurricane Season: Hurricane Ingrid is gathering strength and is on course to hit the Gulf Coast of Mexico sometime Monday. At the same time tropical storm Manuel is churning toward Mexico’s southwest Pacific shoreline. Both storms are expected to bring heavy rains. Hurricane season is late, and there have been fewer storms this year.

National: Four more inches of rain are expected today in Boulder County, Colo., where 15 inches of rain last week killed four people and caused heavy damage. A fifth person is presumed dead and up to 500 are unaccounted for, although in most cases they are in areas cut off by washed out roads and downed utilities.

  • Six passengers and the driver are in the hospital after a Greyhound bus drove off an Ohio interstate yesterday and ended up on its side in a cornfield. Some people sustained broken bones but most of the injuries are not life threatening. One passenger told reporters that the driver was slumped over the steering wheel shortly before the crash. Greyhound said the driver was fully rested and had been on duty only one hour.
  • New Jersey will give $15 million in immediate state aid to the two Jersey shore towns affected by last week’s boardwalk fire. About four blocks and 50 businesses were lost or damaged.

World: Engineers in Italy have been given the green light to try to bring the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship upright and prepare it to be towed away. They will very slowly fill water tanks welded to the ship’s side and use cables to stand it up. The salvage effort has already cost about $800 million. The ship is in danger of breaking up if it’s in the water another winter. Thirty-two people died when the ship hit a rock and rolled over.

Punchline: From the first punch the outcome was never in doubt. Floyd Mayweather Jr. pummeled Saul Alvarez last night in Las Vegas to win the WBC and WBA light-middleweight titles. Both men entered the ring undefeated in what was billed as one of the biggest fights in boxing history. Mayweather is now 45-0 and looking for an opponent who stands an even chance.

Waterworld: In a close first race yesterday in the America’s Cup, the New Zealand boat nearly capsized, giving the win to Oracle USA. New Zealand was right at the tipping point with one hull about 20 feet above the water, but the crew managed to pull it back. The second race was abandoned because of high winds. Because of a two-race penalty for cheating, the US needs 9 more wins to take the cup, New Zealand only 3. Two races are scheduled for today.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
