State of Siege, Angry Republicans

State of Siege: As raids and searches continued throughout Brussels yesterday, police arrested at least six people in the Schaerbeek district of the city. In a separate investigation, French police arrested a man near Paris. They said the suspect was in an “advanced stage” of planning an attack.

CBS News reports this morning it has confirmed that American siblings Alexander and Sascha Pinczowski were killed in Tuesday’s attacks.

Belgian officials now admit they fumbled warnings and alerts that might have helped them avert the Brussels attacks. Turkey had notified Belgium about the danger of a man who turned out to be one of the suicide bombers. The man’s brother, also a suicide bomber, had been wanted since December in connection with the Paris terrorist attacks.

Investigators believe the same terrorist cell may have been responsible for both the Paris and Brussels attacks and that members of the group are still out there.

War Crimes: A United Nations Tribunal yesterday convicted former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Europe’s biggest slaughter since World War II. The 70-year old Karadzic was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Karadzic was accused of leading the siege and shelling of Sarajevo and the slaughter of 8,000 men and boys in Srebrencia in 1995. He is the most senior leader prosecuted for crimes in the war of ethnic cleansing that left 100,000 people dead.

Nation: Vice President Joe Biden yesterday denounced the Republican Senate for refusing to consider President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court. Calling their inaction an “abdication” of their duty, he said that while he was in the Senate, “Every nominee, including Justice Kennedy — in an election year — got an up-or-down vote by the Senate. Not much of the time. Not most of the time. Every single time.”

Biden said President Obama had even nominated a moderate in Merrick Garland as a concession to the Republicans. “We’ve reached out,” Biden said. “Who do you want?”

>Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has signed a new bill that prohibits abortion because of the fetus’s race, gender or disability, and puts new restrictions on doctors.

Anger Management: Republicans are angry that President Obama danced the tango in Argentina rather than come home to show concern about the Brussels attacks. Florida Gov. Rick Scott is so angry he wants Obama to come to Florida to show concern for Belgium.

Donald Trump is angry with Ted Cruz, accusing him of using an old nude modeling shot of Melania Trump in an anti-Trump shot. Cruz is angry at Trump for suggesting Mrs. Trump is better looking than Mrs. Cruz. He said, “Donald, you’re a sniveling coward and leave Heidi the hell alone.”

If this were grade school, all the parents and kids would be called in for a meeting with the counselors.

The Obit Page: Gary Shandling, a dry comedian who made neurosis funny, has died in Los Angeles at age 66. Shandling was a comedy writer who became a successful standup in the 1980s. He had a six-year run on HBO with “The Larry Sanders Show,” a look at life behind the scenes on a talk show, creating a genre following by “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “30 Rock.”

Higher Ed: About 50 Emory University students complained to the school administration that they were frightened and “in pain” after someone chalked the words “Trump” and “Trump 2016” along campus walkways. They said their “safe space” had been violated. What’s in the food at college dining halls these days?

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
