Snit Hits the Fan and New Coke

We’re back and Donald Trump never left.

Bad day at Black Rock:After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused him of a cover-up, President Trump stormed out of a meeting with Democratic leaders saying he would not work with them until they stop investigating him.

The New York Daily Newsheadline this morning says, “SNIT HITS THE FAN.”

Trump left the meeting directly to the Rose Garden where he told reporters he demands that the Democrats “get these phony investigations over with.” He said they could not legislate and investigate at the same time. “I don’t do coverups,” said the president who paid to cover up an affair with a porn star.

It was a suspicious setup. Trump’s lectern was already set with a sign that said, “No Collusion, No Obstruction.” He was prepared to make a point.

Pelosi had made her comment earlier in the day, so when she and other Trump walked into the White House meeting he was fuming and refusing to shake hands. He left within minutes.

You have to get the humor of Trump being offended by someone saying something insulting.

Trump told reporters, “I walked into the room and I told Senator Schumer, and Speaker Pelosi: ‘I want to do infrastructure. I want to do it more than you want to do it. I’d be really good at that, that’s what I do. But you know what? You can’t do it under these circumstances. So get these phony investigations over with.’”

The Democrats later said they were ready to make a $ 2 trillion infrastructure deal. They say he cancelled the  meeting because he can’t get Senate Republicans to vote for the deal.

Also yesterday, a second federal judge, this one in Manhattan, rejected the request by Trump and his family to block a House subpoena for his and his family’s financial records. Judge Edgardo Ramos said he doubted the Trumps could prevail in a trial.

Piling on, The New York State legislature passed a law that would allow Congress to obtain trump’s New York tax returns.

But wait, there’s more. After negotiations, The Justice Department has agreed to hand over to House investigators some of the classified material that was the basis of the Mueller Special Counsel investigation.

Pelosi said, “I pray for the president of the United States, and I pray for the United States of America.”

Twister:A massive and violent tornado ripped through Jefferson City, Mo., last night, with multiple reports of injuries, people trapped in buildings and “catastrophic” damage, authorities report.

The National Weather Service described it as a “Wedge Tornado” — wider in its funnel than it is tall. The tornado lifted debris about 13,000 feet into the air.

“At this point, it’s too early to tell how large the scale of damage will be,” Jefferson City Police Lt. David Williams said at an early-morning news conference. “It’s a chaotic situation right now. We are trying to identify the people that need our help the most.”

The News Roundup:Loudmouth lawyer Michael Avenatti, who rose to notoriety representing porn star  Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against President Trump, has been indicted on charges that he diverted $300 owed Daniels for his personal use and that he attempted to extort $25 million from the Nike athletic gear company. — John Walker Lindh, the young Californian who was nicknamed the “American Taliban” after he was captured by US forces in the Afghanistan invasion of 2001, is set to go free after more than 17 years in prison.  Lindh, who’s 38 now, converted to Islam, and later joined the Taliban, after seeing the movie “Malcolm X.” — CBS News  reports that a migrant girl died in US custody last September, making it six children known to have died under government supervision.

The Jacksons:The $20-dollar bill honoring Harriet Tubman, the former slave, abolitionist, and “conductor” for the Underground Railroad, will not be issued until after President Trump leaves office, even if he wins a second term, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced.

Under an initiative by President Obama, Tubman was to replace Indian-killing Andrew Jackson. The Tubman bill will not be in circulation until 2028, Mnuchin said. President Trump has ridiculed the Tubman 20 as extreme “political correctness.” Treasury department officials have told reporters that Mnuchin delayed the Tubman release rather than risk Trump cancelling it.

New Again:When Coca Cola introduced its Pepsi-like “New Coke” in 1985 it was one of the great marketing disasters of all time. No one asked for it and no one wanted it. It lasted for just 79 days.

Now Coke is bringing back “New Coke” in  conjunction with the Netflix sci-fi thriller “Stranger Things.” New Coke will be featured in several episodes of the series’ third season set in the summer of 1985. And as part of the deal, Coca-Cola will bring back the disastrous drink for a limited time. Very limited.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
