School Cop Investigated, Carson Tops Trump

Nation: The Justice Department says it will investigate an incident in which a white sheriff’s deputy flipped and dragged an uncooperative black girl while other students captured the moment on video at a South Carolina high school. The girl at Spring Valley had been caught using her cellphone during class and ignored repeated orders from her teacher, an administrator, and the officer to leave the room. Deputy Ben Fields overturned the girl’s desk, hauled her out of her seat, and slammed her to the floor where he handcuffed her.

It has quickly escalated into one of those incidents in which the actions of a white police officer toward a black citizen is under question. A Department of Education study says black students are much more prone to be disciplined.

Fields was put on leave and could be fired. Sheriff Leon Lott said, “Even though she was wrong for disturbing the class, even though she refused to abide by the directions of the teacher, the school administrator and also the verbal commands of our deputy, I’m looking at what our deputy did.”

The Series: Fox Sports lost its video feed of the World Series in the bottom of the 4th inning last night when power to the broadcast truck went out. The game was delayed while they were off the air for seven minutes before the Major League Baseball network briefly took over coverage.

Kansas City had opened up with an in-the-park home run off the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning. Alcides Escobar ran the bases in 15 seconds while Mets outfielder missed and chased the ball. New York regained the lead until Kansas City tied it up in the bottom of the 9^th. The game went 5 hours and 14 innings before Kansas City won it 5-4.

The Horse Race: Gentle Ben Carson has replaced the firebrand Donald Trump as the leader in national polls for the Republican presidential nomination. In the most recent poll Carson leads 26 percent to Trump’s 22. The nearest competitor is Marco Rubio at 8 percent.

The Republican candidates debate tonight at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Trump used to herald the polls when he was up, but now he resorts to the old political mantra of denying them when’s he’d falling. “Trumpiowa” tweeted, “Trump isn’t behind in Iowa. Poll has Carson 28% – Trump 20%. 16 point swing in a matter of days. Sample size too small to be taken serious!”

Carson’s rise may be even more shocking than Trump’s, and evidence of how bedrock Republicans hate their professional politicians. Carson is a doctor who does not believe the theory of evolution and would get rid of Medicare. One wag called him “Sarah Palin with a medical degree.”

The Business Page: Walgreens announced it is buying Rite Aid in a deal that would combine the second and third largest drugstore chains. The chains claim the merger will lower prices. We’ll see. Halloween decorations will still be on display by late August.

Bugged: The Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal has pushed the company into a third-quarter loss. The cost of altering 11 million cars to bring them up to standard and the potential lawsuits look like a bottomless money pit.

The Obit Page: Jimmy Roberts, the versatile skater who played both forward and defense and won the Stanley Cup five times with the Montreal Canadiens, has died at age 75. Never a star, Roberts was strong and dependable. He had a 20-year career on ice before he went on to coach the Hartford Whalers and the Buffalo Sabres.

Dming dwn: The math scores of 4th and 8th graders dropped for the first time in 25 years. The 4th graders dropped two points and the 8th graders by three. English scores for the 8th graders also dropped three points. One of the eighth graders later said, “I wsh d test had bn ritN n en.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
