Ryan Won’t Endorse, Canada Wildfire

Hesitation Waltz: In an announcement revealing fractures within the Republican Party, House Speaker Paul Ryan yesterday told CNN he is “not ready” to endorse Donald Trump for president. The rise of Trump has created historic splits in the party that has traditionally fallen lockstep behind its presidential candidate. Speaker Ryan told CNN’s Jake Tapper, “We hope that our nominee aspires to be Lincoln and Reaganesque,” a candidate who “appeals to a vast majority of Americans.”
Other party biggies are refusing to endorse Trump, or even attend the party convention. Both former presidents Bush have turned their backs to Trump, as well as  2012  Republican nominee Mitt Romney. John McCain, the 2008 nominee, also said he’s staying home.
But the big one is Paul Ryan. Will Trump fight a war with the Speaker who attempts to put a face of reason on the party? Maybe. Trump retorted yesterday, “I am not ready to support Speaker Ryan’s agenda.”
Canadian Wildfire: Entire neighborhoods of homes in Fort McMurray, Alberta, have been burned out by a wildfire that has left hundreds of people homeless. The entire city of 80,000 has been evacuated as the uncontrolled fire continued to burn in the forest outside of town overnight.
Serial: A former Los Angeles sanitation worker has been convicted of being the “Grim Sleeper” serial killer who murdered prostitutes going back as far as 30 years. Lonnie Franklin Jr., 63, was convicted of killing seven  women between August 1985 and September 1988, then killing three others between March 2002 and January 2007. His 13-year period of respite resulted in his being tagged the “Grim Sleeper.”
The Vapor Trail: The Food and Drug Administration has issued extensive new rules to control electronic cigarettes, the tobacco-free nicotine delivery devices used to replace cigarettes. People under 18 would be prevented from buying them.
E-cigarettes, which have exploded in popularity, are at the center of a public health argument about whether they help people quit cigarettes or just serve as training wheels for tobacco smoking.
Makers of e-cigs and vapor liquids also would be regulated.
World: Turkish President Recep Tyyip Erdogan has tightened his totalitarian grip on the government by ousting his prime minister, who had been considered an ally. Erdogan has jailed both dissidents and journalists and tried to prosecute a comedian who insulted him. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who mostly sided with Erdogan, but also tried to convince him from going too far, appears to have gone too far himself.
Erdogan came to power as a believer in democracy, but has abandoned that for raw authority to become one of the most powerful leaders in Europe.
The Chimichanga Candidate: Donald Trump wooed Hispanic voters yesterday tweeting a picture of himself eating a taco bowl with the message, “Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!”
Hispanics do not love Trump in return. A full 82 percent of registered Hispanic voters don’t like him. Maybe if he wore a sombrero …

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
