Return of Catch & Release, Harley Goes on Tour

Catch and Release: In a tacit admission that immigration policy isn’t so easy as big talk, Customs and Border Protection  announced that it is backing away from President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy of detaining illegal immigrants and returning to the “catch and release” system Trump rants about.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement just doesn’t have the space to hold every illegal immigrant they catch. They will have to go back to a system of letting people go with a promise to show up for a hearing in court. Catch and Release.

At the same time, the President is pushing to eliminate the current due process under American law. Last night he said at a rally in South Carolina, “I don’t want judges. I want ICE and Border Patrol.”

The Hog Goes to Europe: Harley Davidson, the iconic American motorcycle company, announced that it will start making bikes in Europe to avoid the new tariffs levied in retaliation for President Trump’s tariffs on European steel and aluminum.

Trump’s trade war has quickly begun to injure American companies. Harley sales have softened in the US — nothing to do with the trade war — while they are growing in Europe. They sell 40,000 motorcycles a year in Europe. The company said the tariffs could cost them $100 million just when their European sales are bailing them out.

President Trump, who’s been a big booster of Harley for making its motorcycles in the US, was quick to stick a Twitter shiv in the company’s ribs. He wrote, “Surprised that Harley-Davidson, of all companies, would be the first to wave the White Flag. I fought hard for them and ultimately they will not pay tariffs selling into the E.U., which has hurt us badly on trade, down $151 Billion. Taxes just a Harley excuse – be patient!”

Fine Dining: President Trump, who likes his steak well done, has become a restaurant critic. Writing about the Red Hen in Lexington, Va., which refused service to Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump tweeted, “The Red Hen Restaurant should focus more on cleaning its filthy canopies, doors and windows (badly needs a paint job) rather than refusing to serve a fine person like Sarah Huckabee Sanders. I always had a rule, if a restaurant is dirty on the outside, it is dirty on the inside!”

In other Trump tweets, he called California Rep. Maxie Waters “an extraordinarily low IQ person” and described Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner as “perhaps in a near drunken state.”

Remember what he said; “Dirty on the outside, dirty on the inside.”

Cloudy Horizon: Most people have no idea what the bond market is or how it works, but some money watchers say the market is saying something everyone should know. Matt Phillips writes for The NY Times that “The so-called yield curve is perilously close to predicting a recession — something it has done before with surprising accuracy — and it’s become a big topic on Wall Street.”

There should be a healthy difference between short-term and long-term interests rates for bonds, but Phillips explains that the curve is flattening. He says, “Typically, when an economy seems in good health, the rate on the longer-term bonds will be higher than short-term ones.” But, “Lately, though, long-term bond yields have been stubbornly slow to rise — which suggests traders are concerned about long-term growth — even as the economy shows plenty of vitality.”

Nation: Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, is suing two of his children after they moved to take control of his finances, claiming he has dementia. Aldrin is 88. Troubled actress Heather Locklear was taken to the hospital yesterday suffering a drug overdose. Sunday night she was arrested for assaulting a police officer at her home. The 56-year-old starred in “Dynasty” and “Melrose Place.”

Foul Play: The shooting death of a 35 year-old-man while camping with his two young daughters in Malibu State Park west of Los Angeles has turned into quite a mystery.

They say Tristan Beaudette, 35, of Irvine, Calif. was sleeping in a tent with his daughters. Police were called to a report of gunshots at 4:45 am and Beaudette was found dead in the tent, his 2 and 4-year-old daughters unharmed. Friends were sleeping in tents just a few feet away, but Beaudette’s wife, Erica Wu, was not on the trip.

Beaudette, who had a PHD in chemistry, was an associate director with the pharmaceutical company Allergan.

Campers have reported random gunshots in the middle of the night inside the park, but detectives can’t say if there’s any relation to those incidents.

The resolution to this could be very interesting, or there might not be one at all.

The Obit Page: Richard Harrison, “The Old Man” among the crew on the History Channel show “Pawn Stars,” has died at age 77 of the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. The show about the famous “Gold & Silver” pawn shop in Las Vegas has been one of the History Channel’s most popular since 2009.

Unsuitable: Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer is pitching a television talk show to be called “Sean Spicer’s Common Ground.” If he doesn’t wear that suit he wore his first day at the White House he might have a chance.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
