Rain, Floods, and Wind

SHAKE, RATTLE, AND RAIN: A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook Southern California yesterday just hours before Tropical Storm Hilary began to lash the state with wind and rain.

The quake was centered near Ojai in Ventura County, up the coast from Los Angeles, but no major damage was reported. Down in the Baja peninsula and Southern California, the storm washed out roads, turned plains into lakes, brought down trees, and put homes in danger.

The streets of Palm Springs were flooded, and a road collapsed in Santa Clarita. Cathedral City and some streets in Los Angeles had inches of water.

ORANGE ALERT:  Donald Trump has until noon Friday to surrender for arrest in Georgia.

Some conservative legal scholars are saying that that because of his actions following the 2020 election, Trump is barred by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution from holding the presidency again.

“The people who wrote the 14th Amendment were not fools. They realized that if those people who tried to overturn the country, who tried to get rid of our peaceful transitions of power are again put in power, that would be the end of the nation, the end of democracy,” law professor Lawrence Tribe said on CNN.

Tribe and former federal appellate judge J. Michael Luttig write in The Atlantic that, “The former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, and the resulting attack on the U.S. Capitol, place him squarely within the ambit of the disqualification clause, and he is therefore ineligible to serve as president ever again.”

The 14th Amendment says, “No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

Two members of the conservative federalist Society, law professors William Baude and Michael Stokes Paulsen, wrote for the University of Pennsylvania Law Review that, “The case for disqualification is strong.” They say, “If the public record is accurate, the case is not even close. He is no longer eligible to the office of Presidency.”

FATAL COLORS: A Southern California business owner was shot and killed last Friday by a man who objected to the LGBTQ Pride flag displayed at her clothing store.

According to San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies, the man made “several disparaging remarks about a rainbow flag” that stood outside Lauri Carleton’s Mag.Pi clothing store in Cedar Glen on Lake Arrowhead before he shot and killed her. Deputies later confronted and killed the gunman.

Laura Ann Carleton, 66, who was described as a beloved community member with a great sense of style, shared nine children in a blended family with her husband of 28 years. A lifelong veteran of the clothing and fashion industry, she also owned a boutique by the same name in Studio City.

Gooooal!: Spain scored a single goal yesterday to beat England, the European champion, and win the Women’s World Cup. Spain’s Olga Carmona scored when three players stole the ball from an unwary Brit and punched it past goalie Mary Earps.

Ahh, but there’s always something. Social media are ablaze after the president of Spain’s soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, planted a kiss square on the lips of Spanish forward Jennifer Hermoso during the medals ceremony, sparking outrage over sexism scandals that have plagued Spanish women’s soccer.

Hermoso later said on live television, “Hey, but I didn’t like that!”

THE WAR ROOM: With Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia becoming more frequent, flights were briefly suspended today at two airports in the Moscow area. Russia claims to have shot them down.

THE SPIN RACK: President Biden is set to visit fire-ravaged Maui today. He’s been criticized for having a tepid initial reaction to the disaster. At least 114 people died in the fire. — Russia’s robotic Luna-25 lander punched into the moon yesterday and appeared to have “ceased its existence,” according to the space agency Roscosmos. The Luna-25 was Russia’s first space launch to the moon’s surface since the 1970s. — Human Rights Watch says in a report that Saudi security forces have killed hundreds of Ethiopian migrants attempting to cross the country’s border with Yemen. They just gun them down. — The Catholic school system in Worcester, Massachusetts has issued a policy ordering students to use the names and pronouns assigned at birth and to conduct themselves in a manner “consistent with their biological sex.” The diocese order said, “We do not serve anyone’s greater good by falsifying the truth, for it is only the truth that frees us for the full life that God offers to each of us.”

BELOW THE FOLD: Iraqi officials have ordered all electronic advertising screens to be shut down in Baghdad after a hacker used one to show a pornographic film in an act of retaliation against his employer. Authorities described the brief video as containing “immoral scenes,” as opposed to the usual advertising of products and politicians.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
