Racist Frat Shut, ISIS Destroys Culture

Nation: A fraternity at the University of Oklahoma was quickly shut down yesterday after the Internet posting of a video featuring the frat boys on a bus singing a racist song. To the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know it Clap Your Hands,” they sang, “There will never be a nigger in SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me.”

Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s national organization immediately shut down the Oklahoma chapter and suspended all its members. The University president promised that the people responsible would be dealt with quickly.

By coincidence yesterday, thousands of people marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., to mark the 50th anniversary of the bloody confrontation over voting rights for black Americans.

Culture War: Iraq is investigating reports that Islamic State extremists are destroying a third major archeological site in the northern part of the country. The city of Khorsabad was built to be the capital of Assyria by King Sargon II shortly after he came to power in 721 BC and abandoned after his death in 705 BC. Many of its relief sculptures were long ago removed and are on display in museums in Baghdad, Paris, London and Chicago, but ISIS fighters are said to be leveling what remains.

World: Saudi Arabia is pushing back against critics of its brutal justice in the case of a blogger sentenced to 1,000 lashes for insulting Islam. Raif Badawi received the first 50 lashes in January of what was to be a weekly beating, but he was so badly hurt the punishment was suspended until he is healthy enough to take another crack at beating him nearly to death. The Saudi foreign ministry said it would not accept any impingement on its justice system. A spokesman said, “The kingdom unequivocally rejects any aggression under the pretext of human rights.”

Rape and Speech: India’s NDTV ran dead air for an hour in protest of the government’s ban on a documentary about rape that was to have run in that time slot. The government banned the broadcast of “India’s Daughter” because of its “objectionable” content.

But the censors are also miffed that the film producers got a death row interview with Mukesh Singh, the bus driver convicted in the infamous Delhi bus incident who said, “A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy. A decent girl won’t roam around at 9 o’clock at night… Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes.” The “girl” in his case was a 23-year-old student who died of horrendous internal injuries.

Apple Time: Apple Computer is scheduled to hold an event today presenting and praising the features of its new smart watch, which is expected to be available to buy in April. Apple is hoping to crack open a market for “wearable” computers that other companies have failed to conquer. Smart watches made by Samsung, LG, and Motorola haven’t sold well and the “Google Glass” computer eyewear was taken off the market.

Denial Ain’t a River: The Miami Herald reports that Florida environmental officials are prohibited from using the terms “climate change” and “global warming” in official communications. Even “sustainability” is banned. The unwritten policy went into effect shortly after Gov. Rick Scott took office and appointed a new environmental director. Low-lying Florida is most likely to be flooded by rising oceans caused by GLOBAL WARMING and CLIMATE CHANGE, a situation that might not be SUSTAINABLE.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
