Questions in Texas, Cosby Must Answer

Nation: The sheriff in charge of the Texas jail where a 28-year-old woman died after her arrest in a traffic stop said Sandra Bland told officers she had previously tried to kill herself. Despite that the jail staff did not put her on suicide watch.

Friends and family say the report of attempted suicide doesn’t jibe with what they knew about Bland, who they described as happy and vibrant after moving from Chicago to take a job at a local college.

Bland’s name is now mentioned in the same lineup with other black people who died after confrontations with police officers. Still unanswered in Bland’s case is why a woman stopped for failure to signal a lane change was in jail for three days.

>The young man accused of killing nine black church members in a Charleston, SC church has been indicted in federal court for hate crimes in what appears to have been a racially motivated mass shooting. Dylann Roof, 21, is also accused of firearm violations and obstructing the practice of religion in the June 17 shootings at Emanuel AME Church. In announcing the 33-count indictment, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said that because South Carolina has no hate-crime law the Justice Department needed to step in.

The Coz: Bill Cosby will have to answer questions in a lawsuit brought by a woman who accuses the comedian of molesting her at the Playboy mansion in Los Angeles in 1974 when she was just 15. The California Supreme Court declined to review the case, allowing it to move forward. Letting such an old complaint proceed in court may be a critical turn for some of the 25 women who say Cosby drugged and raped them years ago.

Attorney Gloria Allred said in a statement, “We are looking forward to Mr. Cosby answering questions under oath at his deposition and we will continue to seek justice for our courageous client.”

The Greek Drama: The parliament has passed measures including banking and judicial reform that clear the way for further negotiations over a European bailout of the Greek government. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told his legislators that he doesn’t like the deal, but it’s the only way for Greece to get help and stay in the euro zone.

Have it Your Way: New York fast food workers are on the verge of winning their war for a higher minimum wage. A panel appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo has recommended raising the minimum for burger flippers to $15 over the next few years. A revolt against low wages that started in New York has won higher wages first in other states and major cities. Los Angeles has already acted.

The fast food workers argued that they couldn’t live on the money they make and taxpayers end up subsidizing the big fast food chains through food stamps and welfare.

Death Row Record: In a death penalty surge, Iran has executed nearly 700 people so far this year, according to Amnesty International. That’s at odds with the government’s official number of 246 executions. Amnesty says it has received reports of another 448. Iran has a mandatory death sentence for drug offenses but also executes for such vague crimes as “enmity against God” and “corruption on earth.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
