Protest After Shooting, Clinton Not Absolved

Black Lives: A video has been released showing two Baton Rouge police officers pinning a black man to the ground last night and shooting him dead. A voice on the tape says, “He’s got a gun. Gun,” before the shots are fired.

The dead man was Alton Sterling, 37, a father of five, who had been selling CDs on the street.

As many as 200 people collected after the incident, blocking roads and chanting, “Black lives matter.”

The police had responded to a report of a man threatening with a gun. One witness later said he saw the police remove a gun from the dead man’s pocket.

You’ve Got Mail: The FBI’s recommendation to bring no charges against Hillary Clinton for mishandling government email reduces the issue from a criminal liability to a political stain that will probably never go away. Some of the condemnations by FBI Director James Comey are bound to end up in political commercials.

Comey said, “Although there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.”

Donald Trump tweeted, “The system is rigged. General Petraeus got in trouble for far less. Very very unfair! As usual, bad judgment.”

Comey delivered a long description of the investigation, which sounded at times as if he would end with the announcement of charges. He said it’s possible that “hostile actors” gained access to Clinton’s emails.

The FBI pored over 30,000 emails and found 110 in 52 chains that contained classified information. Comey said, “Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information.”

He said also, in reference to seven Top Secret emails, “There is evidence to support a conclusion that any reasonable person in Secretary Clinton’s position, or in the position of those government employees with whom she was corresponding about these matters, should have known that an unclassified system was no place for that conversation.”

Campaign Trail: The FBI announcement stole the show on a day when President Obama went to bat for Clinton, appearing with her in South Carolina. Without referring to Donald Trump he said, “If your concern is working people, then this is not a choice. I don’t care whether you are white, black, Hispanic, Native American, polka dot, male, female — I don’t care. If what you care is who is going to be fighting for ordinary folks who are fighting for a better life for themselves and their children, then I don’t know how you vote for the guy who’s against a minimum wage, against unions, against making sure that everybody gets a fair shot, against legislation for equal pay, against sick leave and family leave, and against all the things that working families care about.”

Bladerunner: Double amputee runner Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison today for the 2013 killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He could have received a minimum of 15 years, but the judge said, “The life of the accused will never be the same … He is a fallen hero, who has lost his career, and been ruined financially. He cannot be at peace.”

Pistorius has previously served 12 months in prison for manslaughter and was paroled, but his conviction was changed to murder on appeal.

Palintology: Sarah Palin over the weekend offered Donald Trump her advice on who to pick for vice president: “I would tell him to find someone who understands who the boss will be, someone who is not running too, someone who he could serve with who he wouldn’t need a taste test, a food taste-tester around him, you know? You know what I mean?”

Oh, absolutely.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
