Phelps Finishes With 28, Trump v. Times

Final Touch: Michael Phelps finished his Olympic career last night with one last gold medal in the 4×100 medley relay. The most decorated athlete in Olympic history has said he’s going out on top with 28 medals, 23 of them gold. It’s an achievement that may never be repeated.

Phelps’s teammate Ryan Murphy set a world record in the backstroke leg, but the Americans lost the lead on the breast stroke and Phelps pulled it even in the butterfly.

The speculation in Rio was that Phelps will make a comeback for Tokyo in 2020, but he said in a video he posted before swimming his final race, he said “‪Everyone wants four more years. I’m done, I’m finished.”

At age 31, his numbers are stunning. He won five gold in Rio plus a silver; six gold in Athens in 2004; eight in Beijing in 2008; another four in London in 2012. His grand total in four Olympics 23 gold, three silver, and two bronze.

Nation: An Imam from a Queens, NY mosque and a man walking with him yesterday were shot and killed execution-style. A man with a gun in the Ozone Park area came at the two from behind and shot each in the head. Police say they don’t know whether there was a religious motive for the killings, but it seems clear that the two men were targeted.

It’s Political: Donald Trump is fighting back after the NY Times published a story about his fumbling campaign titled, “Inside the Failing Mission to Save Donald Trump From Himself.” Trump tweeted, “The failing @nytimes has become a newspaper of fiction. Their stories about me always quote non-existent unnamed sources. Very dishonest!”

At a rally in Fairfield, Connecticut on Saturday night, he said, “Maybe we’ll start thinking about taking away their press credentials.” Evidently he’s never heard the old saying that you don’t fight people who buy ink by the barrel.

Final Out: The IAAF suddenly yesterday banned the only Russian track and field athlete who was to be allowed to compete in the Rio Olympics, saying they had found new evidence of doping. Long jumper Darya Klishina has always claimed she’s clean. She was originally allowed in the games because she’s based in the US and not under the umbrella of the Russian doping scheme. The announcement of her appeal came simultaneously with her banishment. Klishina said on her Facebook page, “I am a clean athlete and have proved that already many times and beyond any doubt.”

In The Medals: The US women’s eight won the gold for the third Olympics straight extending a rowing dynasty. The US women’s eight have won every major international and Olympic title since 2006. — American Gevvie Stone won silver in a back-breaking 2000-meter race in the single sculls. Stone is a 31-year-old doctor who quit competitive rowing after the 2012 games. She’s back. — Monica Puig, a 22-year-old tennis player who won the Olympic singles, won Puerto Rico’s first-ever medal for a woman. — Simone Manuel missed a gold medal in the women’s 50-meter freestyle by just two one-hundredths of a second.

Seeing Green: Olympic pool technicians have solved the problem of the green water in the Rio diving pool. Someone mistakenly put peroxide in the pool, neutralizing the effect of the chlorine and causing a nice emerald-green algae bloom. They say the diving pool will slowly clear.

On the other hand, the water in the water polo and synchronized swimming pool was to be replaced overnight because it had become so opaque athletes couldn’t see each other underwater.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
