Omarosa on Tape, White Right Fizzles

Omarosa: Don’t mess with the reality show star who goes by the single name, Omarosa. She revealed yesterday on NBC’s Meet the Press that she had secretly recorded her firing by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly in the situation room, one of the most secret and secure rooms in the world.

Omarosa claims to have made multiple recordings in the White House and has the staff wondering who and what else she recorded. She’s hawking her new book, “Unhinged,” which quotes some of the conversations.

What’s stunning, and almost comical in the inept Trump administration, is that she recorded a conversation in the situation room.

In the meeting in the presence of lawyers last December, Kelly mentioned “integrity issues” and “use of government vehicles” when he fired Omarosa. Then he said, “I’d like to see this be a friendly departure. There are pretty significant legal issues that we hope don’t develop into something that will make it ugly for you. But I think it’s important to understand that if we make  a friendly departure we can all, you can look at your time here at the White House as a year of service to the nation and you can go on without any type of difficulty in the future with regard to your reputation.”

Reinforcing his point Kelly said, “You are open to some legal action that we would hope we can control.” Omarosa says she took it as a threat.

President Trump in his private life was notorious for recording conversations. It’s a great irony that his lawyer Michael Cohen, and now Omarosa, have revealed that they recorded conversations to protect themselves in dealing with Trump.

She told NBC’s Chuck Todd, “If I didn’t have these recordings, no one in America would believe me, no one.”

As the woman who was the highest-ranking black member of the staff, Omarosa now says Trump is clearly a racist. Asked whether she had been part of presenting a false front for the President, Omarosa said, “Yes, I was complicit. I had a blind spot when it came to Donald Trump. I wanted to see the best in him. Obviously, I failed miserably.”

The White Right: More counter-protesters showed up in Washington yesterday than Unite the Right white nationalist marchers. It was the one-year anniversary of the surprising white nationalist march in Charlottesville, Va. Thousands of anti-racist protesters lined the streets as only a handful of whities passed. There may even have been more reporters there.

Some of the white nationalists carried American flags and wore Trump “Make America Great Again” ball caps.

Anti-racist protesters in Charlottesville were such a big crowd that they got angry at the cops for being there.

Trade War: This week, as Trump’s trade war with China is expected to escalate, the US will impose already announced tariffs on another $16 billion in Chinese exports, which will be matched by Beijing.

Brook Larmer writes for the NY Times Magazine that while the US carries more weight in the fight, China is a canny adversary. China, he writes, has retaliated for Trump’s trade tariffs with surgical precision. “By taking aim at soybeans and pork, Beijing struck at Trump country in the Midwest, while going after a smaller export like Kentucky bourbon hit the district of the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell,” he says.

Larmer goes on, “The United States would be wise not to underestimate China’s resolve. President Xi Jinping, the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao, has staked his legitimacy on restoring China’s greatness. Backing down is not an option for him; he can’t afford to look weak in a face-off with China’s biggest rival.”

Permawar: Taliban fighters killed more than 200 Afghan government defenders in attacks over the past several days, proving that the insurgents are capable of carrying out complex and effective attacks. In just one attack yesterday in the  southeastern city of Ghazni, more than 100 police officers and soldiers were killed.

Gridiron Blues: University of Maryland football coach DJ Durkin, his  conditioning coach, and two athletic trainers, all have been placed on leave following the death of a player last May. The university is  investigating  whether Durkin’s regime was too brutal.

Jordan McNair, a 19-year-old offensive lineman, collapsed with heatstroke on May 29 and died 15 days later. The Washington Post reports that it was nearly an hour after McNair’s collapse before an ambulance was called, but the university denies it.

Wallace Loh, the school president, said he is “profoundly disturbed by the media reports yesterday about verbally abusive and intimidating conduct by Maryland football coaches and staff towards our student athletes on the team.”

The ultimate proof may be with the video. Maryland football’s practices are recorded by two cameras.

Jaws: Over the weekend “The Meg,” a killer-shark movie that earned a 48-percent green splat on Rotten Tomatoes, was a big hit, earning $141.5 million. “Meg” is short for megalodon.

“The Meg” is now eighth on the all-time “Shark” genre list, right below “Jaws 3-D” and above “47 Meters Down.”

A sample of the dialogue: “Meg versus man isn’t a fight… it’s a slaughter.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
