Obama to Send Ebola Aid, ISIS and ISIL

Ebola: President Obama is expected today to announce a dramatic step-up in aid to stop the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa. He’s sending 3,000 military personnel for medical and logistical help.

The aid also would include five treatment centers with 500 beds. But that is less than the 1,000 beds Liberia says is necessary for patients just this week, let alone the number that will be required as the disease spreads. In response to criticism that the administration has not been fast and generous enough, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the US has already dedicated $100 million to fighting Ebola.

World: The US struck ISIS targets outside Baghdad as part of an expanded air campaign against the Muslim extremists. >A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Tokyo last night. No one was reported injured and damage assessments were preliminary. >Three soldiers of unidentified nationality were killed today in a car bomb attack just outside a US special operations base in Kabul, Afghanistan. Five other soldiers were wounded as well as 13 civilians. >The Ukraine parliament has voted to grant self-rule to rebel-held areas of eastern Ukraine and to give amnesty to rebel fighters.

The Football Business: The Minnesota Vikings have re-instated running back Adrian Peterson after suspending him following accusations that he had hit his four-year-old son with a switch. A Viking statement said, “Today’s decision was made after significant thought, discussion and consideration.” The Vikings without Peterson lost 30-7 to the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Fall Weather: A wildfire that broke out yesterday outside Weed, Calif. near Yosemite National Park, has damaged or destroyed at least 100 homes. About 1,500 people were evacuated as winds blew at about 40 mph and the fire threw embers that quickly advanced the burn area. The numbers are likely to be bigger today as firefighters update their statistics.

September and October can bring the hottest weather in California, and the peak of wildfire season. A major fire is also burning in the Cleveland National Forest in Orange County, south of Los Angeles.

Watching the Watchdogs: The National Labor Relations Board has ordered CNN to re-hire 100 union contract employees and compensate 200 others who were replaced by non-union employees in 2003. This comes just as CNN is about to lay off more people and do less with less, according to network boss Jeff Zucker.

You Say Tomato: The Obama administration has caused some confusion by referring to the religious army originally known as “ISIS” as “ISIL.”

Some have interpreted ISIS to mean Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. But the Arabic term for ISIS is “Al-Dawla Al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham,” or the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. The term “al-Sham” refers to an area from southern Turkey through Syria to Egypt, including Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian territories, and Jordan. That’s the territory of “The Caliphate” that ISIS leaders dream of establishing. The English term for that same area is “the Levant”, hence the White House choice of “ISIL.”

A White House official told Fox News on background that the two terms mean the same thing, which still doesn’t explain why they chose the name few others are using.

Save Money: Bloomberg News reports that Wal-Mart’s chief spokesman David Tovar has resigned after the company found out that he had lied about receiving a BA from the University of Delaware in 1996. If his degree had been manufactured in China for 27 cents that would have been OK.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
