Obama & Putin Not Speaking, Ladies Home Folds

Ukraine Warming: A series of events is ratcheting up the tension in the Ukraine crisis. The US says Russian fighter jets have violated Ukrainian airspace at least half a dozen times in recent days. It’s not clear what might be the Russian intent, but it could be to test Ukrainian air defenses.

Russian troops have been holding military exercises on the border. Ukraine fears they are so close they could keep rolling and invade on a moment’s notice.

Pro-Russian separatists claim to have shot down a Ukrainian helicopter over the airport outside Sloviansk. The gunmen occupying the city say the helicopter had been violating their “airspace” while dropping leaflets to the populace. The pilot was injured.

Ukraine appears to have turned off the water supply to Crimea, endangering this year’s crops in the newly declared Russian territory. Ukraine’s North Crimea Canal delivers about 80 percent of Crimea’s water from the River Dnieper.

President Obama and Russia’s Vladimir Putin have stopped talking directly after failing to come to meaningful agreement about the Ukraine crisis. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel also reports that his Kremlin counterpart refuses to take his calls.

Flight 370: After a robotic search craft has failed to find evidence of the missing Malaysian airliner, Australian authorities say they are going to widen the search. The Bluefin 21 has searched an ocean area with a 6.2 mile radius that in some places is nearly three miles deep.

World: A former Brazilian colonel who tortured and killed prisoners during 21 years of military rule has been murdered in his home. Police say three men entered the home of Paulo Malhaes suffocated him and stole computers and guns. Malhaes was unapologetic about his role during a period from 1964-1985 in which at least 500 people disappeared or were tortured and killed. He recently said he didn’t regret killing “as many people as necessary.”

Ferry Disaster: South Korean divers recovered 48 bodies from a dormitory room intended to house 38 inside the sunken ferry. They said all the dead in that room were wearing life jackets, suggesting that the group collected as the boat went into distress. Slightly less than a third of the 111 rooms on the ship have been searched, with 187 bodies recovered. South Korean authorities revealed with some embarrassment that a few bodies have been misidentified and released to the wrong families.

Nation: Connecticut authorities are investigating whether a 16-year-old Milford high school student was stabbed to death yesterday because she had declined a prom invitation. A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody.

Folded: The 131-year-old Ladies Home Journal has laid off its entire staff and will publish its final monthly issue in July. The magazine has 3.2 million subscribers, less that half its 1968 peak of 6.8 million. The parent company says the magazine will still be available on the Internet and will publish quarterly special editions.

The Obit Page: Earl Morrall, the backup quarterback who led both the Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Colts to the Super Bowl, has died at age 79. Morrall was beaten in the Super Bowl once with Miami and once with the Colts, but in 1971 he subbed for an injured Johnny Unitas in the second quarter and led the Colts to a 16-13 win over Dallas.

Pre-Existing Condition: Oregon authorities decided yesterday that its healthcare website is terminally ill and gave up trying to save it. Cover Oregon.Com, which was never capable of signing a single customer, will be abandoned for the state to join the federal Obamacare website. Oregon’s $248 million website was built by the programming powerhouse Oracle, which generously volunteered to help with the transition. Thanks, but we’ll take it from here.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
