NY Commuter Crash, National Distrust

Derailed: At least four people were killed this morning when a Metro North train from Poughkeepsie to New York derailed near the Spuyten Duyvil station. The New York Fire Department says 67 people were injured, 11 critically. Four of the train cars jackknifed, one of them nearly going into the Hudson River. The cause of the accident is unknown.

Crashed: Actor Paul Walker, 40, who starred in the Fast & Furious series of movies with Vin Diesel, was killed yesterday in a flaming car wreck North of Los Angeles. Walker was a passenger in a red Porsche driven by a friend when it hit a lamppost and burst into flames. The friend also died.

World: The US will destroy some of the worst of Syria’s chemical weapons at sea, according to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. A Navy ship is being outfitted for the operation, says the OPCW, which is overseeing the operation. Syria has a Dec. 31 deadline to get the most dangerous of its chemical weapons out of the country.

  • Thirty-three people died when a Mozambique Airlines plane bound for Angola crashed in a game park in northeast Namibia. The wreckage was found in Bwabwata National Park, near the borders of Angola and Botswana. Officials said there was bad weather and poor visibility at the time of the crash.

National: A scandal in the Navy’s Pacific Fleet supply network is spreading. Seven Navy officials, including two admirals, have been under investigation for sending ships to ports in the Pacific where a company called Glenn Marine inflated the bills. Now a supply company called Inchcape Shipping Services, that serves the Middle East, Africa and South America, is under scrutiny, suggesting the navy supply system is rife with corruption.

  • As expected, the Obama Administration declared victory today saying the healthcare website can now handle 800,000 visitors a day. But they also admit it still has problems and could be down 10 percent of the time.

The National Trust: Americans are a suspicious and mistrustful bunch, according to a new survey by the Associated Press.

  • 70% trust the sales person who swipes their credit card
  • 50% don’t trust the people who prepare their food in restaurants
  • Only 19% trust the people they meet while travelling
  • Just 2% trust their government to do the right thing

  By the way, 34% of the survey respondents own a gun.

The Obit Page: Paul Crouch, a founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) has died at age 79. Crouch and his wife Janice, known for her heavy makeup and pink wigs, built CBN into one of the largest Christian broadcast operations in the world.

Message from Mom: India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) has finished circling earth and is headed to the Red Planet. The $72 million spacecraft is designed only to orbit Mars where the US already has several rovers on the surface. But MOM tweets! Get this: “Trans Mars Injection completed successfully. Engine burn time was 1328.89 sec & the imparted incremental velocity was 647.96 m/s.”
