Not the Parade Trump Wanted

PARADE REST: President Trump’s grand military parade was overshadowed on Saturday by the turnout of millions of people across the country for anti-Trump “No Kings” rallies, the Israel-Iran war, and the murder of a Minnesota state legislator. News anchors kept cutting away from the parade to cover breaking events on other fronts.

The parade itself was uninspiring because American troops are not trained to march in impressive unison like they are in Russia and North Korea. The lumpy American fatigues are no match for the crisp and flashy uniforms in totalitarian countries. Nobody holds a parade like the Russians on their annual Victory Day over Nazi Germany with generals who have rows of medals down to their waists.

Although the Washington parade was ostensibly to mark the 250th anniversary of the US Army, it was a politicized event to have military might pass in review for a President who sent 4,700 troops to quash disturbances by a few hundred protesters in Los Angeles. And it was the President’s birthday.

The whole event was tone deaf, out of tune with much of America, and even clueless about the music they played, including Creedence Clearwater’s “Fortunate Son,” a cry against wealth and militarism:

“It ain’t me, it ain’t me
I ain’t no military son, son, Lord
It ain’t me, it ain’t me
I ain’t no fortunate one, one”

Trump’s speech was loaded with praise for himself and what he sees as a world conquering military. He said, “For two and a half centuries, our soldiers have marched into the raging fires of battle and obliterated America’s enemies, there’s never been anything like it. There’s never been a force like this, and I rebuilt it. I gave you so much money for four years it was crazy.”

The President did not mention that the US Army was formed 250 years ago humbly and reluctantly under the command of George Washington, who called it a “band of brothers” to free the colonies from the rule of King George.

As he watched the parade, Trump could not hear the chants of “No Kings” from millions of Americans filling streets across the country.

MANHUNT: Police in Minnesota last night captured a man they believe was the shooter on Saturday who killed a state lawmaker and her husband and also wounded another member of the legislature and his wife. Vance Boelter, 57, has been charged with murder.

After being spotted on a trail camera, Boelter surrendered near a home where his wife and children live.

State Democratic Rep. Melissa Hortman, the former state House speaker, and her husband were killed at their home by a man dressed as a police officer who had arrived in a vehicle that looked like a police car. The man wore a tactical vest. Police arrived just as the shooter was leaving the house and exchanged gunshots before the man ran away.

Police had decided to check the Hortman home after State Senator John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, were shot in a separate attack but survived.

Gov. Tim Walz said Hortman was the most consequential speaker the state legislature has ever had.

Inside the car left at the Hortman home, police found a manifesto, a lengthy hit list and additional weapons. Boelter is said to be under financial duress and living with a male roommate, a childhood friend.

THE WAR ROOM: Israel and Iran traded fire all weekend with Israel taking hits in residential areas and an oil refinery, sustaining at leads 24 deaths. Israel claims to have hit the headquarters of Iran’s elite Quds force. Iran says 224 of its people have been killed since Friday.

PROFIT MOTIVE: President Donald Trump reported over $600 million in income and $1.6 billion in assets in a public financial disclosure covering the year 2024. His wealth includes cryptocurrency, income from his properties, and lucrative licensing deals with foreign developers.

One of his largest single sources of income was his stake in the cryptocurrency platform World Liberty Financial, where he reported $57.3 million in token sales. He still holds $15.75 billion in governance tokens in WLF, according to the filing.

BOEING DOWN: Authorities released the final words from the cockpit of the Air India flight that crashed last week: “Thrust not achieved … falling … Mayday! Mayday!” The crash killed a total of 265 people in the plane and on the ground.

ROYAL WEDDING: Democratic Party royalty turned out over the weekend for the wedding in the Hamptons of Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin to Alex Soros, scion of George Soros, the party’s most generous donor.

Present were Bill and Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and even Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour.

The vocal group Boyz II Men performed at the wedding in a gated estate.

Abedin, 49, was first married to former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose marriage and political career dissolved in a sexting scandal back in 2011. Soros is 39 and likely to carry on with the family’s liberal philanthropy.

Anthony Wiener was not invited to the wedding.

ICE CAPADES:  The Florida Panthers beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 Saturday to take a 3-2 lead in the Stanley Cup finals. Game six is tomorrow night in that hub of ice hockey, Sunrise, Florida.

THE SPIN RACK: A fire yesterday ripped through a 67-story residential tower in Dubai’s affluent Marina district, forcing nearly 4,000 residents to evacuate in the night. Flames were bursting through openings in about 25 stories. — Britain’s MI6 spy agency has named its first female chief. — Spanish citizens on the island of Mallorca have been shooting visitors with water pistols in protest over tourism that has crowded the streets and made housing expensive. The natives have become restive all across Europe.

BELOW THE FOLD: King Charles yesterday sent out a warm Father’s Day greeting. He doesn’t speak to his son, Harry.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
