Navy Yard Shooting, Summers Pulls Name

Shooting: At least 10 people were shot this morning, including police officers, at the Washington Navy Yard. Three victims are reported dead. Police have described a gunman dressed all in black.

National: A woman is now the next most likely candidate for Chairman of the Federal Reserve to replace Ben Bernanke. Janet Yellen, vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board, would be the first woman to run the Fed. President Obama’s first choice, former Harvard president Lawrence Summers, has withdrawn his name from consideration. A lot of people think Summers is arrogant and overbearing. That and strong opposition among some Democrats killed his chances.

  • Heavy rains yesterday grounded helicopters that have been pulling stranded residents from flooded Colorado mountain towns. Six people are listed as dead, the most recent an 80-year-old woman washed away with her home. Another 1,253 people are “unaccounted for” because they cannot be reached. About 1,500 homes have been destroyed and 12,000 people have been forced to leave.

World: Twenty-one people are already reported dead in two major storms hitting Mexico. Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Manuel caused flooding and landslides on Mexico’s Pacific coast. About 6,000 people have evacuated in advance of Hurricane Ingrid, expected to make landfall on the Gulf coast today.

  • The UN is expected to release a report today on the use of chemical weapons in Syria. A Syrian government minister says the deal to destroy his country’s chemical weapons is a “victory” that avoids war. Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar, is quoted by a Russian news agency saying, “On the one hand, it helps Syria come out of the crisis and, on the other, it helps avoid the war against Syria depriving those who wanted to launch it of arguments to do so.”
  • The Kaesong industrial park in North Korea re-opened this morning. The North withdrew 53,000 workers and the park closed in April during a period of tension with the US and South Korea. The park makes goods for southern industries and provides jobs for the starving North.

Bro: The quarterbacking Manning brothers played even for half a game in New Jersey yesterday until older brother Peyton ran away with it in the second half. Denver’s Peyton beat the Giants’ Eli 41-23.

There She Is: Miss New York, Nina Davulur, 24, last night became the first woman of Indian descent to be crowned Miss America. She did a Bollywood dance for the talent competition. Unlike Miss Kansas, she has no tattoos.

I Keel You: The Washington Post reports that former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden said Sunday that Gmail is the preferred Email service for terrorists because it’s anonymous. He said, “I don’t think you’re going to see that in a Google commercial.” The NSA knows because they look at Email traffic. You won’t see that in an NSA commercial.
