N. Korea Tests Bomb, Obama Teary About Guns

Tremors: The earth shook in South Korea and the North claims that it has tested a hydrogen bomb. The US Geological Survey Reported a 5.1 magnitude quake 30 miles from the North’s nuclear testing site.

If it was a successful nuclear test it presents a significant threat from the Hermit Kingdom. A female announcer said on North Korea’s state television network, “This is the self-defensive measure we have to take to defend our right to live in the face of the nuclear threats and blackmail by the United States and to guarantee the security of the Korean Peninsula.”

Gunbeat: President Obama became emotional yesterday as he announced somewhat modest executive orders to control or monitor the sale of guns across the country. Speaking about the first graders gunned down in Newtown, Conn., Obama became teary as he said, “Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad.”

The executive director of the National Rifle Assn. accused the president of engaging in “political rhetoric instead of offering meaningful solutions.”

The NY Times points out that major mass shootings and efforts at gun control usually lead to a spike in gun sales. The combination of the Sandy Hook school shooting and President Obama’s re-election resulted in the sale of 2 million guns. The San Bernardino terrorist massacre led to 1.6 million gun sales.

Obama decried the lack of action by Congress to do anything. He said, “The gun lobby may be holding Congress hostage right now, but they can’t hold America hostage.”

Republican candidate Ted Cruz has already produced an ad that portrays Obama as a Nazi-looking gun confiscator.

Nation: Southern California has gone from drought to drowned in a day. The first El Niño storm of the season dumped 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain, flooding the 101 Freeway above Ventura. Rain is expected all week. A few days of this and that’s when houses start sliding off hillsides. Up north the snowpack in the Sierra mountains is above normal, good news for farmers and skiers. It might snow two feet today.

Crime and Punishment: The Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer” has spawned a national petition to re-examine the case of Steven Avery, a man with a 70 IQ who spent 18 years in prison for a rape he did not commit, only to be convicted of murder four years after his release.

The documentary raises serious questions about whether the cops planted evidence and framed Avery in revenge for his wrongful conviction lawsuit. Prosecutors say the documentary left out critical evidence, but thousands of people who’ve seen the series now say Avery got screwed.

The Obit Page: Industrial designer Richard Sapper, who created a teapot that whistled in two keys, has died at age 83. Sapper designed the IBM Thinkpad and did work for Mercedes, Fiat and Pirelli. But his greatest achievement may have been the sleek Coban 9090 espresso machine, which revolutionized home coffee making.

Global News: The Boston Globe is slighting one of the biggest stories in Boston right now. Itself. The Globe is failing to deliver its own newspaper.

Our Boston stringer Emily Rooney told us yesterday, “This is a fiasco day 8 – one paper came to my building and I grabbed it – got a funny tweet from a guy who was thrilled to see his paper at 5:15 this am after none last 7 – it was yesterday’s!”

The Globe recently changed delivery services to save money and the conversion is so chaotic they had to recruit reporters and office staff to deliver the paper. The disaster may cost more than the savings.

The Globe’s publisher now says they’re now returning to their old distributor for about half their deliveries.

If Boston’s Metropolitan Transit failed to run the Globe would be all over it, but the Globe has been spare in covering its own problems. Then again, subscribers who aren’t receiving the paper already know the story.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
