Melania Cribs from Michelle, Cops Targeted

Melania: Introduced by her husband, a rare appearance by a presumptive nominee at a convention, Slovakian-born former model Melania Trump impressed the crowd speaking in Cleveland last night.

But word watchers immediately noticed that her speech bore two striking resemblances to Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech to the Democratic convention. One example:

Trump, 2016, “From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise; that you treat people with respect,” Trump told the thousands of Republican delegates and assembled media on Monday night in Cleveland.

Obama. 2008, “You work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.”

The Republican Show: The Republican convention opened in discord yesterday with a faction of anti-Trump delegates making a noisy attempt to have a lengthy roll call vote and create an embarrassing delay in the evening proceedings. It didn’t work. Trump supporters drowned them out with a chant of “USA, USA!”

During the evening a lineup of speakers praised Trump and took shots at Hillary Clinton. Among them was Willie Robertson of the faux reality show, “Duck Dynasty,” and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who said Clinton had run a “vicious, nasty” campaign.

Noting that Clinton loves pantsuits, Colorado’s Republican Senate candidate Darryl Glenn said, “We should send her an email and tell her that she deserves a bright orange jumpsuit.”

Pat Smith, the mother of a diplomat killed in Benghazi, said, “I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son.”

Politi-Salad: Donald Trump’s campaign manager slammed Ohio Gov. John Kasich yesterday for refusing to endorse The Donald’s candidacy. “He’s embarrassing his party in Ohio,” Paul Manafort said, as though Kasich could possibly be the only Republican embarrassing the party in Ohio this week.

Get Me Rewrite: The man who served as the ghostwriter for Donald Trump’s 1987 book “The Art of the Deal” tells The New Yorker he’s sorry. Writer Tony Schwartz says if he could rewrite and re-name the book he’d call it, “The Sociopath.” Schwartz says that during their time together Trump was fidgety, angry, and had no attention span. He said, “I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes, there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.”

Officers Down: Louisiana State Police investigators say the killing of three law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge Sunday was a planned ambush. Louisiana State Police Col. Michael D. Edmonson said, “There is no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated.” Edmonson described Long as “moving tactically” during the gunfight.

The gunman, Gavin Long, a former Marine was armed with an assault rifle and a pistol. He had a second assault rifle in his car.

Long left a lot of tracks online, where he had identified himself as a person who was being harassed by mind control weapons. He also identified himself as racially oppressed and said in a YouTube video, “One hundred percent of revolutions, of victims fighting their oppressors have been successful through fighting back, through bloodshed. Zero have been successful just over simply protesting.”

Unhappy: Former members of the 60s band The Turtles are not happy that the Republican Convention last night used a rendition of their son “Happy Together.” Lead singer Howard Kaylan tweeted, “Now we call the lawyers.” Bandmate Mark Volman said, “The RNC seems to be going out of its way in creating more of a negative than a positive, so I don’t think ‘Happy Together’ really fits.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
