Jet Part Found, Cop Indicted for Murder

Clue: A piece of airplane wing that washed up on a remote island east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean has been identified as probably coming from a Boeing 777, leading investigators to suspect it may have been a wing flap from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370. It’s the only missing 777 in the world. Réunion Island, where the part was found, is about 2,500 miles east of the search grid for MH370.

If the part is identified as coming from MH370 it may confirm that the jet went down in the ocean, but after 18 months, it won’t necessarily tell investigators where.

Nation: A University of Cincinnati police officer who stopped a motorist for a missing front license plate and ended up killing him has been indicted for murder. The driver, Samuel Dubose, 43, wouldn’t produce a driver’s license and Off. Ray Tensing reported that Dubose drove off, dragging Tensing.

But prosecutor Joe Deters said “This is the most asinine act I’ve ever seen a police officer make” and that Tensing “never should have been a police officer.” Referring to video of the incident he said, “When you see this you will not believe how quickly he pulls his gun and shoots him in the head. It’s maybe a second. It’s incredible.”

Permawar: Afghanistan’s intelligence agency now reports with certainty that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is dead. The NY Times quotes the intelligence spokesman saying, “We confirm he is dead. He died in April 2013, two years back, in Karachi.” Peace talks scheduled with the Taliban for tomorrow were postponed because of the “uncertainty” created by news of Omar’s death

The Roundup: Will Dana, the Rolling Stone editor who gave the green light to an article about a gang rape at the University of Virginia, resigned yesterday after 19 years with the magazine. Also yesterday, the fraternity reported to have been the site of the rape filed a lawsuit against the magazine.

>The big-game hunting Minnesota dentist who killed the popular Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe has closed his office and gone into hiding amid demonstrations in front of his building and a storm of hate messages on the Internet.

The Sports Page: In one of the stranger scenes in baseball, Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores was crying on the field last night because of rumors that his team was planning to trade him to Milwaukee. The Mets kept Flores in the game but had to put in a hitter for him in the 9th inning because he was such a mess. The Mets lost 7-3 to the Padres, the trade deal fell through, and Flores probably has been told many times by now that there’s no crying in baseball.

The Donald: Digging for every blunt, mean, exaggerated, insulting, and stupid thing that Republican candidate Donald Trump ever said, the NY Times turned up a gem in an old lawsuit. Back in 2011 a husband and wife legal team was taking a deposition from Trump when the wife, Elizabeth Beck, asked for a break to pump breast milk for her baby. According to accounts of the incident, Trump insisted on continuing and Beck displayed her breast pump to emphasize her point that she needed to go. Trump said, “You’re disgusting.”

Doubling down yesterday, Trump told CNN, “She wanted to breast pump in front of me and I may have said that’s disgusting, I may have said something else. I thought it was terrible.” Trump said, “She’s a vicious, horrible person.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
