It’s Going to be Trump, Hamilton and Tony

No Lyin’: Donald Trump is now all but officially the Republican nominee for president.

Losing the Indiana primary by a margin wider than the drubbing predicted in the polls, Texas. Sen. Ted Cruz dropped out last night. After delivering one of the best addresses of his campaign and sounding like he’d won the presidency, Cruz then said, “From the beginning, I’ve said I would continue on as long as there is a viable path to victory. Tonight I’m sorry to say it appears that path has been foreclosed. Together, we left it all on the field in Indiana.”

Trump beat Cruz 53.2 to 36.7 percent. On the same day that he accused Cruz’s father, Rafael, of being associated with the Kennedy assassination, Trump flattered his vanquished opponent for quitting, saying, “What Ted did is a brave thing to do, a great thing to do.”

John Kasich — remember him? — is hanging in there. Stephen Colbert said, “It’s like the old saying, quitters never win, but they still beat John Kasich.”

Slow Bern: Bernie Sanders dealt a psychological blow to Hillary Clinton, beating her by six points in Indiana.

Without targeting Hillary Clinton, Sanders thundered on about income inequality and specifically attacked Walmart and the Walton family that founded it. “They pay their workers wages that are so low that the American taxpayer has to pay for the food stamps and the Medicaid that many Walmart employees need because their wages are too low.”

Show Biz: The hip-hop Broadway musical Hamilton about the first secretary of the treasury and the Founding Fathers, has collected 16 nominations for the Tony Awards, a record in the history of the awards. Notable is the racial diversity Hamilton brought to the nominations. This is a show in which Thomas Jefferson is played by a black man. Hamilton’s nominations include Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Most Difficult Ticket to Get.

Slammer: Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, 72, was sentenced to 12 years in prison yesterday for corruption. It’s the second longest sentence handed to a dirty New York politician in recent years.

Waiting in the wings to be sent away are the former state senate minority leader, Dean Skelos, and former Senate Democrat leader, John Sampson. Silver, Skelos, and Sampson will join seven other state level politicians in prison, almost enough for a quorum.

Nation: The Marines are investigating once again whether the six men in the famous photo of raising the flag over Iwo Jima were all correctly identified. James Bradley, the author of the book “Flags of Our Fathers,” says he now doubts that his father John, a Navy corpsman, was one of the six.

>After making their point, Detroit teachers return to work today after the state of Michigan promised emergency funding.

>The Navy SEAL killed in Iraq has been identified as Charles Keating IV, grandson of the Charles Keating who was a key figure in the 1980s savings and loan scandal.

Uber and Under: Call the Uber ride service on New Year’s Eve or Super Bowl Sunday and a 10-mile ride could cost a couple of hundred dollars. But that’s about to change. Uber announced that it will do away with its unpopular “surge” pricing under which riders get gouged when drivers are scarce. The move isn’t so popular with drivers, who really make bank when surge pricing is in effect.

Find iPhone: The NY Times published an entertaining story about a man who lost his iPad in the Ft. Lauderdale airport and used the iCloud finder function to follow his device’s travels. He messaged his phone number to the screen, but no one called. His iPad travelled to Memphis and the Bahamas and finally settled in the Miami suburb of Miami Lakes. He sent a balloon bouquet with the message, “Thinking of You.” That apparently unnerved the woman who had the iPad in her possession and she turned it over to the lost and found at the Fort Lauderdale airport. After watching it all on his computer, the owner of the iPad was about to call the lost and found, when they called him.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
