Israel Hits Shelter, Marathon Execution

Gaza: At least 15 people were killed and 200 wounded today when Israel shelled a United Nations school used as a shelter. About 120,000 Palestinians have sought shelter from the fighting in UN schools.

As discussions continue about ending the conflict, the leader of the Hamas Islamic militants says a condition of ceasefire is the end of Israel’s crippling economic blockade. Since 2007 when the militant Hamas organization took control of the government, Israel has blocked Gaza from receiving everything but humanitarian supplies.

Ukraine: Seventy-four more bodies of the 298 dead passenger and crew arrived in The Netherlands today. Yesterday the first 40 travelled in a parade of hearses through streets lined with Dutch citizens, some of whom threw flowers on the hoods of the vehicles.

Fighting continues in the area where Malaysian Flight 17 went down. The Ukraine government says the missiles that shot down two Ukrainian fighter jets yesterday came from inside Russia. “The planes were shot down from Russian territory,” a defense spokesman said on Twitter. A rebel leader claimed his men had shot down the planes with shoulder-fired missiles from inside Ukraine.

Flight Report: The FAA has lifted its ban on flights to Israel, apparently satisfied that rockets coming out of Gaza are not a threat. But it’s been a tough 24 hours for air travel.

>An Air Algérie jet with 116 people on board slipped off the radar as it flew across the Sahara overnight. It was flying from Burkina Faso to Algeria. The plane flew over areas where there are active Islamic militants, but they are not known to have weapons that could take down a plane. Two French fighter jets were searching for wreckage.

>A Taiwanese passenger jet trying to make an emergency landing crashed yesterday on Penghu Island, killing at least 51 people on board. Eleven people survived. Taiwan was battered by heavy rains and high winds at the time of the accident.

Nation: Controversy over lethal injection was stoked yesterday when the execution of an Arizona inmate took an hour and 40 minutes. Witnesses differed on whether Joseph Wood III was gasping for air or merely unconscious and snoring. But it went on so long his lawyers had time to file a cruel and unusual punishment appeal while Wood was still on the table. Wood had been convicted of killing his former girlfriend and her father.

>General Motors recalled another 718,000 vehicles yesterday from the model years 2011-2015. The cars have a variety of problems. GM has recalled more than 30 million vehicles just this year. The company said today it expects to pay $400 million to the families of 13 people killed in accidents caused by faulty ignition switches.

Pravda: Russian propagandists are trying to put a fantastical spin on the crash of Malaysian flight MH17 for consumption at home. Among the theories presented by the Russian press: A Ukrainian fighter plane shot down the passenger jet; The shootdown was an attempt to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose jet had flown nearby; The people on board the plane were already dead and loaded on the flight that was then crashed into eastern Ukraine to make it look like it had been shot down by pro-Russian rebels.

And despite saying “Don’t believe what you read on the Internet,” Russian propagandists are altering Wikipedia accounts of the crash to keep the blame off Mother Russia, proving their own point that you can’t believe what you read on the Internet.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
