Hungary Builds a Fence, Big Extra Point

The Great Migration: Hungary is rushing to build a 13-foot fence along its border with Serbia to stem the flow of migrants coming from war ravaged Middle East countries. The government plans to start arresting migrants who enter the country illegally. In the meantime they are herding migrants into camps to register them.

By contrast, Germany has openly welcomed many thousands of migrants but in Munich, the city where most migrants enter the country, authorities say they have accepted all they can handle. About 13,000 arrived just yesterday and a police spokesman said, “We have reached the upper limit of our capacity.”

Wildfire: Two fast-moving wildfires in Northern California’s gold country have burned more than 65,000 acres, destroying 80 homes and forcing the evacuation of 6,000 residents. One fire threatens Middletown in Lake County.

Black Lives: Former tennis star James Blake says the New York cop who threw him to the ground and handcuffed him should be fired. Video of the incident shows Blake standing outside a Midtown hotel waiting for a car when Off. James Frascatore rushes up to him and throws him to the ground. Frascatore has been with the NYPD for four years and has already been the subject of a number of excessive force complaints. He’s been put on desk duty.

Blake, 35, has told reporters that Frascatore never identified himself as a cop, even after Blake was in handcuffs. He said, “I don’t think this person should ever have a badge or a gun again.”

By the Numbers: Vice President Joe Biden would beat any Republican presidential candidate by a wider margin than Hillary Clinton, according to a new NBC/Marist poll. The poll puts Biden 56-38 percent over Donald Trump and 50-42 percent over Jeb Bush. Clinton polled at 53-40 against Trump and 49-45 against Bush. Of course Biden has not declared himself and there’s nothing like actually entering the race to lower a candidate’s numbers.

Major Tom: Russian astronaut Gennady Padalka has returned to Earth having set the record for spending the most time in space. The 57-year-old Padalka just finished 168 days on the International Space Station, bringing his total to 879 days in space over five trips, two months more than anyone else. He said, “I am fine.”

Net Result: Italy’s Flavia Pennetta beat the woman who beat Serena Williams to win the US Open in New York yesterday, then promptly announced her retirement at the end of the year. At 33, Pennetta is the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam event. She put away Roberta Vinci 7-6 (4), 6-2, then said while still on the court, “I would like to say goodbye to tennis. This was my last match in the US Open, and I couldn’t think of a better way.”

Grade Fail: President Obama announced yesterday that he’s giving up on establishing a government ranking of 7,000 American colleges and universities that was stiffly opposed by many leaders of those schools.

Obama had wanted a system that gave schools a ranking that was, in part, designed to shame schools that spit out graduates burdened with debt and dim chances of employment. But much of his opposition said the federal government has no business ranking colleges.

Instead, the president unveiled a website that gives information on annual costs, graduation rates, and salaries after graduation.

The Obit Page: Dennis Greene, a founding member of the Sha Na Na doo-wop revival group, who later became a University of Dayton law professor, has died in Ohio at age 66. Formed at Columbia University in the late 60s, the group performed at Woodstock in 1969 as the warm-up to Jimi Hendrix. Tired of the road and the life of a musician, Greene left the group in 1984 to study law.

Making a Point: Kent State’s April Goss yesterday became only the second woman to score points in a college football game when she kicked an extra point for her team’s 45-13 win over Delaware State. In her fourth year with the team, Goss finally got her shot. She nearly shanked it, but it cleared the uprights and she was mobbed by her teammates.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
