Hillary Slipping, ISIS Blows Temple

The Horse Race: Hillary Clinton is slipping and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is gaining ground in the Democratic race for president in Iowa. Sanders is just seven points behind Clinton, who now leads 37 to 30 percent in the Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll. Clinton has lost a third of her support since May, according to the poll.

Sanders told ABC News, “I think the gains that we are seeing, and the enthusiasm and the huge crowds that we are seeing, this is not anti-Hillary Clinton. This is pro-Bernie Sanders and pro a message that says enough is enough. This country and our government belong to all of us, not just a handful of very wealthy people.”

On the Republican side, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson is now leading Donald Trump, according to the Iowa poll.

Culture War: The Islamic State has heavily damaged another portion of the ancient ruins in Palmyra. Witnesses report that ISIS blew up the columned ruins of the 2,000 year old Temple of Baal, which was built for the Palmyerene gods and was one of the best-preserved sections of the ancient ruins. ISIS destroys relics that are not Islamic. This comes just a week after they destroyed another important section of Palmyra.

Nation: The father of murdered television reporter Alison Parker told CNN that politicians are “cowards” for not passing gun control legislation and, they’ve “messed with the wrong family.”

Andy Parker said he’s going to fight for better gun laws, particularly to keep guns away from people with mental illness and, “I just want people to know that I’m going to be working on this for a long time.” He said, “I know that this is not a sprint. It’s a marathon.”

His 24-year-old daughter and her cameraman were killed by a deranged former television reporter last week outside Roanoke as they were live on the air.

Other families before Parker have made the same pledge and been forgotten. Parker said he fears people will forget his daughter like they have with victims of other gun rampages. “What I would like for everyone to know and to keep in mind is, you know — just don’t be desensitized to this issue. And don’t go, ‘Oh, gee, this is another horrific incident, what’s for dinner tonight, honey?'”

Politically Correct: On the eve of travelling to Alaska, President Obama announced yesterday that after nearly a century North America’s tallest peak, Mt. McKinley, will be given back its original name, Denali. In native culture it means “the high one” or “the great one.”

McKinley, re-named by white men for the American president, has been the subject of years of political fights over its designation. McKinley’s home state of Ohio has long fought to keep the name. In his march of executive actions late in his second term, President Obama is giving the win to Alaska and its native population.

The Obit Page: Wes Craven, the master of the slasher horror film who made “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Scream,” died of brain cancer in Hollywood at age 76. His other films include “The Hills Have Eyes”, “The Last House on the Left,” and “The Serpent and the Rainbow.” He once said his movies don’t create fear, they release fear. It was Wes Craven who gave the world Freddie Kruger, the killer who comes to you in your dreams.

The Sports Page: Coming from eight runs behind, a team from Japan beat Lewisberry, PA 18-11 yesterday to take the Little League World Series. It was the third title for the Kitasuna Little League in Tokyo and the 10th overall for Japan.

>Maria Sharpova has withdrawn from the US open with a nagging leg injury. Her absence increases the chance that Serena Williams could win the Open and complete the Grand Slam of major tournament wins.

PolitiSpeak: Looking to block the flow of illegal maple syrup from the North, Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker said on NBC that building a wall on the Canadian border “is a legitimate issue for us to look at.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
