Healthcare Hack, Brian Williams Shot Down

Healthcare Hack: In one of the biggest thefts ever of customer information, Anthem, the nation’s second largest health insurer, revealed that it has been the target of a massive hacking attack that took the personal records of 80 million customers. The company described it as a “very sophisticated external cyber attack.” Anthem says the hackers got names, addresses, birth dates, and social security numbers, but no medical information.

Nation: The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission has called for the Internet to be regulated as a utility similar to telephone service. Regulating and keeping the net “open” would prevent the blockage of some content or payment for favored status, thereby preserving what’s called “net neutrality,” according to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler.

Of particular concern is the possibility of fast and slow lanes on the net. Fast for rich companies like Google and Netflix, and slow for startups, thereby stifling Internet creativity. Wheeler’s plan is a blow to big Internet and telecommunication companies.

9/11 Secrets: Zacarias Moussaoui, a convicted conspirator in the 9/11 attacks, has claimed that he had contact with high-level Saudi officials before the execution of the plot that took down the World Trade Center. His claim has drawn renewed attention to 28 classified pages in the 9/11 investigation that some people suspect may confirm Saudi complicity. President George W. Bush ordered the section of the report dealing with Saudi Arabia to be classified. Relatives of the victims are demanding its release.

World: Jordanian jets bombed Islamic State targets today after the country’s king vowed to wage a “harsh” war against ISIS for the murder of a captured Jordanian pilot.

Antisocial: A 2008 Pentagon report says that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism that makes him socially awkward and extremely controlling. The study, which obviously was done without a physical examination, says Putin’s “neurological development was significantly interrupted in infancy.”

Hard Road: The man behind the underground Silk Road website, which became an international drug market using Bitcoins for payment, has been found guilty of narcotic trafficking in a New York federal court. Ross Ulbricht, 30, faces up to life in prison. Silk Road used the so-called “dark web,” which allowed buyers and sellers to operate anonymously.

The Obit Page: Charlie Sifford, the first black golfer to join the PGA tour, has died at age 92 in Cleveland. Sifford won the National Negro Open five times in the 1950s but pushed to break down the color barrier. On the PGA tour he was jeered and spectators would kick his ball into the rough, but he was ultimately named to the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Memory Hole: Contrary to what he and his network have claimed since the 2003 Iraq War, NBC News anchor Brian Williams has admitted that he was not on board an army helicopter hit by an RPG and forced down.

Williams repeated the claim as recently as Friday during a veteran tribute at a New York Rangers hockey game. He said, “The helicopter we were traveling in was forced down after being hit by an RPG. Our traveling NBC News team was rescued, surrounded and kept alive by an armor mechanized platoon from the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry.”

In fact Williams was on a chopper that came in an hour later … not under fire … and the crew on the damaged helicopter told the Stars and Stripes newspaper they’ve always been rankled that the NBC star claimed he was on board with them.

Questioned by the Stars and Stripes Williams said, “I don’t know what screwed up in my mind that caused me to conflate one aircraft with another.” Last night on his broadcast Williams only said that he had “bungled.”

Now Williams can legitimately say he has been shot down.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
