Germany Tightens up, Pageant Apologizes

The Great Migration: Germany announced yesterday that it is taking emergency border control measures after accepting what turned out to be an overwhelming number of refugees. They’ve run out of places to put everyone.

After accepting tens of thousands of refugees in just weeks, Germany’s interior minister said it is “desperately necessary” for Germany to “limit the flow to Germany and to reinstate an orderly entry process.” Germany is now expecting a million migrants this year.

European Union leaders today are discussing plans to relocate 160,000 migrants in Greece, Hungary, and Italy.

Nation: An uncontrolled wildfire in Northern California has destroyed 400 homes and businesses in and around Middletown in Lake County. Entire blocks of homes and buildings burned through the night as fire hydrants ran dry. A brand new elementary school and the clothing-optional Harbin Hot Springs retreat also burned.

Church v. State: The Kentucky county clerk who went to jail rather than issue same-sex marriage licenses returned to work today saying she would not issue or authorize any marriage licenses, but will not interfere with her deputies. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis also said she questions whether the licenses are valid without her signature.

There She Is: The Miss America Pageant last night apologized to its 1984 winner Vanessa Williams, who was forced to resign her title after the release of nude photos taken before she won the pageant. The audience erupted in applause.

As Williams stood on stage, Pageant executive chairman Sam Haskell said, “You have lived your life in grace and dignity, and never was it more evident than during the events of 1984 when you resigned.” Williams had been the first black Miss America.

Miss Georgia, Betty Cantrell, won the title last night, even after fumbling a question about whether Tom Brady cheated when he played with underinflated footballs. Later she said, “It was kind of a funky question to ask me if Tom Brady cheated.”

World: Russia is flying giant transport planes over Iran and Iraq to supply its new base in Syria, against American objections. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, “There were military supplies, they are ongoing, and they will continue.” It’s Russia’s biggest military buildup in the Middle East in decades.

The military equipment is expected to be used against the Islamic State and Syrian rebels in an effort to prop up Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad.

The Obit Page: Basketball great Moses Malone, who was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player three times, has died at age 60. The 6-10 Malone played in the NBA from 1974 through 1995, ultimately with six teams, but he led the Philadelphia 76ers to the Championship in 1983. He was nicknamed “The Chairman of the Boards.”

PolitiSpeak: Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker said on CNN that recent killings of police officers have been partly the fault of President Obama. “We need a president who first and foremost says that law enforcement professionals across this country are doing the job,” he said. “We need them to keep us safe, we need to have their back, and he has been silent on this and that’s an outrage.”

>Retired Neurosurgeon Ben Carson said on ABC that the US has to be careful about welcoming Middle East refugees who might turn out to be terrorists. “We cannot put our people at risk because we’re trying to be politically correct,” he said.

>Donald Trump on Ben Carson: “I’ll make great deals for this country. Ben can’t do that. Ben’s a doctor and he’s not a deal maker and I’ll make great deals for our country, which is very important.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
