G-7 Talks Temps, Primates of Park Avenue

World: Leaders at the G-7 summit today in Germany are focusing on climate change and international terrorism.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to reach an agreement for limiting rising global temperatures and creating a fund to help poor countries hard hit by climate change.

Speaking at yesterday’s meeting which focused on Russian aggression in Ukraine, President Obama accused President Vladimir Putin of a “wrongheaded desire to recreate the glories of the Soviet empire.”

>Turkish politics are in turmoil after the ruling party of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lost the majority in parliament for the first time in 13 years. The AKP party is trying to form a new coalition to rule, but the vote may thwart Erdogan’s plan to bolster his power by getting a two-thirds majority to alter the constitution and turn Turkey into a presidential Republic. Erdogan had become an iron-fisted ruler, feared by many Turks as a man on the path to dictatorship.

Human Wave: An international coalition of ships rescued 5,900 North African migrants in the Mediterranean just over the weekend. All of the rescued migrants are being taken to Italy, which is causing difficult politics at home. What do they do with all those migrants? European Union leaders are scheduled to discuss a plan to disperse the migrants among other countries and do something tougher to stop the flow.

Nation: A $100,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of two convicted murders who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannnemora, NY. Gov. Andrew Cuomo described it as “a crisis situation.”

Despite a dragnet with roadblocks and search dogs, Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, have disappeared into the ether. Without the usual devices like cellphones and credit cards that leave electronic breadcrumbs, the two so far have left no trail.

B-Ball: The Cleveland Cavaliers beat Golden State 95-93 last night to even the series at 1-1.

Police Beat: A McKinney, Texas police officer has been suspended after pinning one teenager to the ground with his knee and pulling his gun on another while trying to break up a rowdy unauthorized pool party. The 15-year-old girl on the ground screamed, “I want to call my mom. He hit me.” Eventually a dozen cops responded. The police said the kids refused to follow their orders and the teenagers said the police became aggressive for no good reason.

Theatah: Dame Helen Mirren, whose career has spanned from vixen to dowager, won her first Tony Award last night for playing Queen Elizabeth II in “The Audience.” She has now won an Oscar and a Tony for playing the same role.

BookBeat: The tell-all “Primates of Park Avenue” has ruffled a lot of fur on the Upper East Side of New York for it’s unflattering portrayal of mommydom among the rich. Some residents of the jungle say author Wednesday Martin exaggerated the upper crust fixation on having the right handbag, getting a child into the career-launching pre-school, and the overbearing demeanor of co-op boards. Martin wrote that some women are paid a year-end good performance “wife bonus” by their husbands, and everyone is phoning around to find out who those women are.

The NY Post dug deeper and says the book is “full of lies.” Evidently dates were changed, events commingled, and characters composited.

As a result Simon & Schuster says it will put a disclaimer on future editions of the book saying, “It is a common narrative technique in memoirs for some names, identifying characteristics and chronologies to be adjusted or disguised, and that is the case with ‘Primates of Park Avenue.”

Martin moved to the West Side long before her book opened the Birken bag of secrets on her former homeland.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
