Flash Flood Kills, Trump “Entertaining”

Flash Flood: A flash flood late yesterday swept away two vehicles carrying women and children in the Arizona/Utah border town of Hildale, home of the fundamentalist polygamist sect run by Warren Jeffs. Eight people are dead and five are missing.

Heavy rains in the canyons north of town sent waves of water through the streets. Rescuers worked through the night. Many of them were women wearing the long prairie dresses that is the uniform for members of the polygamous offshoot of the Latter Day Saints.

Nation: Five members of a fraternity from Baruch College in Manhattan face third-degree murder charges in Pennsylvania for the 2013 hazing death of a 19-year-old Freshman. In all, 37 members face criminal charges involving the death and covering up the cause afterwards.

Chun Hsien Deng was forced to march in a frozen yard carrying a backpack full of sand while he was tackled by frat boys. Deng suffered a severe head injury and the other members delayed getting help until it was too late.

Migrants on the Serbian side looked for ways through the fence while others began a sit-down strike protesting the blockade.

World: Former investment banker Malcolm Turnbull is poised to become the next prime minister of Australia after defeating PM Tony Abbott in a vote held by Liberal Party lawmakers.

He said, “Ultimately, the prime minister has not been capable of providing the economic leadership our nation needs.”

Permawar: Egyptian aircraft hunting for militants in the desert yesterday mistakenly attacked a tourist caravan, killing 12 and wounding 10. The government says eight of the dead were Mexican citizens. Survivors said they were hit by a plane and helicopters and when they tried to escape they were fired upon by ground troops. The group of 22 had parked their vehicles for a cookout near the popular Bahariya oasis in the western desert.

Bernie: Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders spoke at Liberty University in Virginia yesterday, trying to convince evangelical students they have a lot in common with a Jewish socialist senator from Vermont. It was a rare moment when a politician delivered a speech in hostile territory. Sanders admitted from the outset that he disagreed with his audience about same-sex marriage and legal abortion.

But speaking about the morality of politics when it comes to poverty and income inequality, Sanders said, “I am motivated by a vision which exists in all of the great religions — in Christianity, in Judaism, in Islam, Buddhism and other religions — and which is so beautifully and clearly stated in Matthew 7:12,” he said. “And it states: ‘So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the law and the prophets.’”

Donald: Two days from the second Republican presidential debate, Donald Trump in Texas yesterday railed against illegal immigration, calling the US “a dumping ground for the rest of the world.” Speaking to about 15,000 people in Dallas, Trump denounced so called “anchor babies,” children born in the US just to get citizenship, and immigrants who become gangsters. He said, “It’s disgusting what’s happening to our country.”

Hillary Clinton called Trump “entertaining.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
