Egypt: President Obama cancelled September’s joint military exercise with Egypt following yesterday’s massacre in Cairo. He did not cut off military aid. At least 525 people were killed and 3,717 injured when security forces cleared two protest camps built in support of ousted President Mohamed Morsi. The action was led by bulldozers, followed by security officers firing shotguns and automatic weapons. Protesters pushed an armored police vehicle off an elevated highway bridge. Among the dead are a British television cameraman, an Arabic newspaper reporter and the 17-year-old daughter of a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Forty-three police officers were killed.

The court was shown a “selfie” picture of Manning in a blonde wig. Manning was found guilty of giving a trove of US secrets to WikiLeaks. His lawyers said troubled mental health contributed to poor decisions. Manning told the court, “When I made these decisions I believed I was going to help people, not hurt people.”

  • Former Ill. Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and his wife Sandi were sentenced to prison yesterday for bilking their own campaign funds to buy personal luxuries. Jackson was given 30 months in prison, his wife, a former Chicago Alderwoman, got one year for tax evasion. Jackson has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder but the judge said that could not explain why he squandered $750,000 on jewelry, furs and stuffed elk heads. Because the couple has young children, Jackson will serve his time first.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
