Deadly Floods in Texas, Pants on Fire

Heavy Weather: At least six people in Texas have died in floods created by heavy rains in the past several days. An 11-year-old boy is also missing in Kansas after falling into a flooded river.

As much as 16 inches of rain in fell in some areas, causing roofs to collapse and sweeping cars into creeks. One woman died when the car in which she was a passenger ended up in a creek.

Liar, Liar: In a speech in San Diego, Friday, Donald Trump railed against the federal judge hearing the fraud case against the defunct Trump University. Trump said, “I have a judge who is a hater of Donald Trump, a hater.” And he said, “The judge, who happens to be, we believe, Mexican, which is great, I think that’s fine.” If he thought it was fine, he would not have mentioned it. Also, the judge in question, US District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, was born and raised in the US.

In a strongly worded editorial, the Washington Post lists a series of Trump’s outright lies, deceptions, and diversions. He revived the long-discarded conspiracy theory that Bill and Hillary Clinton had their friend Vince Foster murdered in a Washington, DC, park. Trump lied about how much money he raised for veterans and that he had given $1 million himself.

The Post’s editorial says, “The Republican Party, the media and voters cannot pretend that Mr. Trump is a normal candidate. Mr. Trump is pathologically dishonest and morally bankrupt. How many more lies will he tell before the week is over? Republicans who care about their integrity should be counting along with us.”

Give Me a Break: Speaking on CBS yesterday, Bernie Sanders complained about the Democratic nomination system that has Hillary Clinton in an easy lead even though Sanders has won close to half the vote. “I wouldn’t use the word rigged, because we knew what the rules were,” Sanders said on “Face the Nation.” “But what is really dumb is that you have closed primaries like in New York State where 3 million people who are [not] Democrats or Republicans could not participate, where you have a situation where over 400 super delegates came on board Clinton’s campaign before anyone else was in the race, eight months before the first vote was cast.”

The Obit Page: Jane Fawcett, who, as a 20-year-old working in the British decoding center at Bletchley Park during World War II and identified a message that led to the sinking of the fearsome British battleship Bismarck, has died at age 95. Then known as Jane Hughes, her job was to read decoded messages in their original German. She came across a message from a German general inquiring about the wellbeing of his son on the battle-damaged Bismarck. The answer revealed that the ship was headed to Brest in Brittany for repairs. On the way, the Bismarck was swarmed by British torpedo planes and warships.

In a recent book about Bletchley, Fawcett said, “It was very bad accommodation. Very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. No insulation of any kind except for blackout curtains.”

Gorilla Outrage: Animal lovers are outraged that keepers at the Cincinnati Zoo killed a gorilla that had handled a four-year-old boy who fell into the enclosure. Zookeepers shot the 400-pound Western Lowland Gorilla named Harambe rather than use tranquilizer darts and wait for them to take effect.

The boy had expressed a desire to get into the pen with the gorilla before he managed to crawl through a hole and fall 12 feet into a moat. Amateur video shows that the gorilla at first violently dragged the boy then handled him gently and seemed to be protecting him. The boy was not seriously hurt.

Outraged people posted protests laced with foul language. One woman said in angry all caps, “THIS POOR GORILLA LOOKED MORE CONFUSED THAN ANYTHING…AND SO OBVIOUSLY NOT TRYING TO HURT THIS CHILD…”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
