Croatia Overwhelmed, Trump the Birther

The Great Migration: Croatia closed seven of eight border crossings with Serbia after being overwhelmed by a crush of migrants. Officials in Zagreb said 10,000 people crossed the border in the day after Hungary closed its border with Syria, and Croatia just couldn’t handle it.

Although Croatia at first said it welcomed the migrants, but the interior minister said, “Don’t come here any more. This is not the road to Europe. Buses can’t take you there. It’s a lie.” Migrants continued to pour into Croatia across open fields today after spending the night without shelter.

Buy Out: General Motors agreed to pay a $900 million fine for failing to report a problem with ignition switches that is blamed for the deaths of 124 people. The switches had a tendency to turn off while the car was in motion, disabling the vehicle’s steering and braking systems. Cars were knowingly built with that defect for more than 10 years.

Families of some people who died immediately expressed outrage that no one at GM was charged with a crime for covering up. The mother of one Wisconsin teenager told the NY Times, “I don’t understand how they can basically buy their way out of it. They knew what they were doing and they kept doing it.”

Econ 101: With the world economy softening, the Federal Reserve decided yesterday not to raise interest rates, which have been close to zero since 2009. The financial markets, which have been in a tizzy with anticipation that rates might go up, had little reaction.

In practice, when interest rates go up, people buy less stuff and the value of businesses … stocks … goes down. Interest rates though, are at an all time low and would have to go up a lot before anyone really notices.

Don’t Forget to Vote: The White House is urging legal immigrants to register to vote, which would add millions of voters to the pool for the 2016 presidential election. The White House says it wants to make it easier, and cheaper, for 8.8 million legal immigrants to become citizens. Republicans, including the leading candidate Donald Trump, immediately accused president Obama of trying to stack the Democratic vote with newly minted citizens.

Article 30: The military hearing continues today for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who faces a possible life sentence for leaving his combat base in Afghanistan in 2009 and being captured by the Taliban. Prosecutors want to court martial Bergdahl for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

Bergdahl’s lawyer said his client had a “severe mental disease or defect” at the time.

Incoming: Donald Trump is taking fire this morning after failing to take on a man in a public forum who said President Obama is a Muslim. The man said, “We have a problem in this country. It’s called Muslims. We know our current president is one. You know he’s not even an American.” Trump, who was a driver behind the “birther” movement that claimed Obama was not born in the US, didn’t really respond to that.

Trump said, “We’re going to be looking at a lot of different things. A lot of people are saying that. A lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. We’re going to be looking into that and plenty of other things.”

Hillary Clinton tweeted, “Donald Trump not denouncing false statements about POTUS & hateful rhetoric about Muslims is disturbing, & just plain wrong. Cut it out. –H”

Well, that should do it.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
