Cold Turkey, The Unsocial Network

Cold Turkey: It was 11 degrees in Buffalo, 21 in New York, and 16 in Boston at 6:30 this morning. A cold snap moved into the East Coast overnight just in time for Thanksgiving. Temperatures are expected to be 10 to 25 degrees below normal.

High winds threaten to ground the giant balloon figures at the Macy’s parade in New York.

Out West, rain is expected to fall on Northern California, raising the danger of mudslides in the wildfire burn areas. Snow is forecast for the Rockies and Sierras.

Taking any opportunity to demonstrate his ignorance, President Trump tweeted, “Brutal and Extended Cold Blast could shatter ALL RECORDS – Whatever happened to Global Warming?”

Unfriended:Facebook admitted yesterday that it had hired an opposition-research company to investigate billionaire George Soros over his criticism of the social network.

Facebook’s outgoing head of communications and policy said he was responsible for hiring the company, Definers Public Affairs, to investigate who was behind the “Freedom From Facebook” campaign.

The company then used the information it found to feed into an existing anti-Semitic conspiracy theory involving Soros. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg had denied knowledge of the Definers campaign that was revealed in the NY Times last week. Facebook has since fired Definers.

Judicial Temperament: President Trump and Chief Justice John Roberts are having a public spat after the President called a federal judge who ruled against him “an Obama judge.”

This, like everything under the Trump administration, is unusual.

Trump was referring to US District Judge John Tigar in the 9thDistrict (San Francisco) who threw out the President’s rule that immigrants applying for sanctuary must enter the country at official gateways. The law says they can enter anywhere.

“We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” Roberts said in a statement yesterday. “What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for.”

The President hates the 9th District because it tends to rule against him. Trump fought back from Florida via Twitter saying, “Sorry Chief Justice John Roberts, but you do indeed have ‘Obama judges,’ and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country.” He said, their “rulings are making our country unsafe! Very dangerous and unwise!”

The Business of President:If it was not clear already, President Trump made it even clearer in a tweet yesterday that his relationship with Saudi Arabia is all about business, not morality or American values.

After giving Crown Prince Mohammed a pass on the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Trump was excited yesterday about the price of oil. He tweeted, “Oil prices getting lower. Great! Like a big Tax Cut for America and the World. Enjoy! $54, was just $82. Thank you to Saudi Arabia, but let’s go lower!”

Fred Ryan writes in The Washington Post, “A clear and dangerous message has been sent to tyrants around the world: Flash enough money in front of the president of the United States, and you can literally get away with murder.”

Lock and Load: The White House yesterday gave US troops at the border permission to use deadly force against immigrants if necessary. The order was signed by Chief of Staff John Kelly. Under federal law, troops may not be used for law enforcement.

It’s not shocking that the White House “deadly force” order is at odds with Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who says the 5,800 soldiers at the border aren’t even armed. “They don’t have guns in their hands, there is no armed element going in,” Mattis told reporters.

If they want to use deadly force, they’re going to have to feed the enemy the Grilled Jalapeno Pepper Jack Beef Patty from their MREs.

About 3,000 migrants in a caravan have finally arrived in Tijuana and begun to seek asylum in the US. They have showed no intention to “invade” as President Trump has claimed.

Most Foul: Police in New Jersey have accused the brother of a man murdered with his entire family of setting a fire in his own home.

Paul Caneiro, 51, has been charged with arson.

Investigators have yet to offer an explanation of the murder of Paul’s brother Keith, 50, along with his wife and two children. Keith was found shot dead outside and the rest of the family was found dead in their burned out mansion in the upscale town of Colts Neck.

Paul Caneiro is accused of using gasoline to set his own home on fire while his wife and two daughters were asleep inside. No one was hurt. That fire was reported at 5 am Tuesday, about 7 ½ hours before the alarm for the fire at his brother’s house.

Obviously, there’s a store unfolding here.

Domestic Tranquility: The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office yesterday declined to bring felony domestic abuse charges against celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti. A woman friend had accused him of hitting her and Avenatti always maintained that no such thing happened.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
