Cold Moving In, Bombs, QB Showdown

Son of Polar Vortex: Cold and snow are moving back into the East. It’s 25 in Pittsburg, 25 in NYC and 32 down in Birmingham, Ala. But for NY and New England, it’s going to be single digits later in the week.

Pakistan: A car bomb at a Pakistani military compound today killed 20 people and wounded 30. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

Thailand: Two explosions injured 28 people at anti-government protests in Thailand. It’s become increasingly violent. A grenade attack killed one person Friday, and yesterday one person was shot and wounded.

World: Nearly 20 million Egyptians voted in favor of a new constitution this week. Only 1.9 percent of the vote was against, but Islamists boycotted and there was a low turnout among young people.  It’s Egypt’s second new constitution since the Arab Spring and the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarek. The vote was overwhelming, but in in recent weeks the government was arresting people who publicly urged a “no” vote.

>Seven suspected militants were killed yesterday in a shootout with security forces in Russian Dagestan. They were suspected of carrying out a grenade attack on a restaurant in the region’s capital, Makhachkala. The incident took place about 400 miles east of Sochi, where the Winter Olympics will be held.

>The primary US-backed Syrian opposition group has decided to attend peace talks scheduled to begin this week in Switzerland. If they show, it would be the first face-to-face meeting between the exiled opposition and the government of President Bashar Assad.

Bollyreal: The wife of a prominent Indian politician was found dead in a hotel room after revealing her husband’s affair with another woman on Twitter. Sunanda Pushkar had tweeted about her husband’s affair with a Pakistani journalist. A doctor described her death as an “unnatural, sudden death.” The doctor said, “there were certain injury marks on the body, but we can’t divulge details at this point.” It was Pushkar’s husband Shashi Tharoor, a former foreign minister, who reported finding her.

Cool Runnings: The Jamaican two-man bobsled team has qualified for the Olympics. But the team is broke and needs at least $80,000 for travel and expenses to get there. Jamaican bobsledders first ran in the 1988 Olympics, but it’s been 12 years since their last appearance.

Throwdown: What could be a great quarterback battle takes place in Denver today to determine which goes to the Super Bowl. New England’s Tom Brady, who has won the Super Bowl three times, faces Peyton Manning, who’s won the bowl once. In an era of great quarterbacks, these are two of the best.

Awww: The 7 month old Panda Bao Bao made its public debut at the National Zoo yesterday. She crawled around for a bit then fell asleep. Bao Bao is the first Panda to survive birth at the National Zoo since 2005.

Sunday Social: France’s First Lady Valerie Trierweiler has left the hospital where she spent a week after the revelation that her palace housemate, President Francois Hollande, is having an affair with an actress. ** A nun in Italy who gave birth to a full term baby boy said she had been unaware she was pregnant. She named the boy Francis after the Pope. ** Former NBA star Dennis Rodman is in rehab for drinking too much after his most recent trip to hang out with the North Korean dictator. **Russian President Vladimir Putin said he is not prejudiced against gay people. “I myself know some people who are gay.”
