Clinton by a Hair, Olympic Doping

The Numbers Game: Bernie Sanders won the Oregon primary and Hillary Clinton barely eked out a win in Kentucky by half a percent, about 1900 votes. Clinton and Sanders basically split Kentucky’s delegates, making little difference in Clinton’s overall lead, but Sanders continues to nip at her heels. Sanders isn’t winning, but he makes Clinton look weak.

The Thrill of Victory: Amid recent reports of systematic doping by Russian athletes, the US Justice Department is opening an investigation into state-sponsored cheating. The investigation will examine Russian government officials, athletes, coaches, and even the anti-doping authorities who were supposed to root out use of performance-enhancing drugs. Under US law prosecutors need only a thin connection to this country — money passing through an American bank, for example — to bring charges.

And the International Olympic Committee announced yesterday that as many as 31 athletes who competed in the Beijing Summer Olympics may be barred from the Rio games after a re-examination of their doping tests. The athletes come from 12 countries and participated in six sports.

Sue ‘Em: In a slap at President Obama … not that it’s anything new … the Senate voted yesterday to allow US citizens to sue Saudi Arabia for claims of complicity with the 9/11 attacks. The Senate bravely passed its bill with a unanimous voice vote of both parties, knowing that President Obama promises to veto it.

A suppressed 28-page section of the 9/11 investigations may link some powerful Saudis to the financial and logistical support given the attackers.

President Obama has warned that suing foreign governments is a slippery slope that could end up with the US buried in lawsuits as well. A 1976 law forbids such suits, but the Senate’s bill creates an exception. It now goes to the House.

**The Trump Section**

Fox in the Fox House: Donald Trump figuratively kissed and made up with Fox News host Megyn Kelly last night, giving her a one-hour interview. He said of his campaign style, “If I were soft, if I were presidential … in a way it’s a bad word, because there’s nothing wrong with being presidential, but if I had not fought back in the way I fought back, I don’t think I would have been successful.”

As for the prospect of coming up a loser in November: “If I don’t go all the way, and if I don’t win, I will consider it to be a total and complete waste of time, energy and money.”

Trump Girls: Donald Trump and his lawyers are railing against the NY Times and demanding a retraction of the paper’s weekend story about Trump’s sometimes demeaning, sometimes praising, and always complicated relationship with women. Trump tweeted in protest, “No wonder the @nytimes is failing—who can believe what they write after the false, malicious & libelous story they did on me.”

The story quickly became #1 on the Times list of most-read and most shared stories on its website. They say they are not likely to retract it.

Yes, He Said That: Quoting President Obama’s graduation speech at Rutgers University, Donald Trump tweeted, “ ‘In politics, and in life, ignorance is not a virtue.’” This is a primary reason that President Obama is the worst president in U.S. history!”

The Obit Page: The diminutive Jane Little, who played the double bass for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for 71 years, died on stage over the weekend. She was 87.

Little began with the symphony when she was just 16. She was only 4’11’’. She told an interviewer, “”I was so lucky to be able to come into an orchestra in my own hometown. I was married to the principal flute player for 41 years. And he was this big, 6-feet-2 guy that played a little flute — and he could carry my bass for me, too.”

At the moment Little collapsed, the orchestra was playing “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
